Yay, it’s time for confusing fall warblers. They are beautiful & fun #birdbanding #blockisland #tnc #connecticutwarbler
Please note: bird banders use specially designed pliers to carefully close the appropriate sized, numbered band around the bird’s tarsus/leg, then determine the age and sex of the bird, measure the wing length, quantify fat, weigh the bird, and release it. The banding process is quick: it usually takes less than a minute for each bird. All banding, marking and sampling is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s BBL.

It is always a treat to come upon a turtle in spring time. Usually it is either Painted Turtle or Snapping Turtle that is discovered. On this day it was the not-so-common Spotted Turtle that was observed crossing the road, an uncommon treat of observation. #blockisland #spottedturtle

Nov. 3: Northern Saw-whet Owl. Always a favorite end-of-season species. Please excuse my incorrect reference to its furred toes. Of course they are feathered (not furred) toes. And that clacking heard near the end of the video is the owl. It’s always a thrill & an honor to be in the presence of this wondrous critter. #northernsawwhetowl #birdbanding #blockisland #owl Please note: bird banders use specially designed pliers to carefully close the appropriate sized, numbered band around the bird’s tarsus/leg, then determine the age and sex of the bird, measure the wing length, quantify fat, weigh the bird, and release it. There is nothing better than starting spring migration with a returning bird. This yellow warbler was originally banded at this BI station in 2019. It has done at least 6 round trips from BI to somewhere south - covering thousands of miles, and always returning to this little corner of the island for nesting. Each time the bird is re-caught - 5 times since 2019 - an entry is made on his data card. It is stunning that this bird, weighing about 10g and is at least 7 years old has made so many over land & sea journeys. #birdbanding #yellowwarbler #blockisland #migration Please note: bird banders use specially designed pliers to carefully close the appropriate sized, numbered band around the bird’s tarsus/leg, then determine the age and sex of the bird, measure the wing length, quantify fat, weigh the bird, and release it. Experienced my first - and probably only - total eclipse in VT. Moon shadow started in bottom right corner, and exited the upper left. No photograph or words can describe the moments … #solareclipse
