These are the two battle droids we made for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu at Tippett Studio. They were guarding the final door at the Hutt Palace and tussled a bit with Mando and Grogu as they sought unauthorized entry to that door.

These were the most complex stop-motion puppets I’ve ever made armatures for and there were nonstop technical challenges to overcome. It was also an incredibly fun job too, getting to watch this whole sequence be constructed from the ground up and getting to spend some more time in that galaxy far far away.

The rest of this threateningly talented team were:

Chuck Duke (@cdook) has been animating films since the 90s and his insight in our latest bonus episode goes deeper into his experience being new and familiar creatures to life through stop motion.

And YES, we all know it’s not technically chess. Know the official name of the game? Drop it in the comments ♟️

The Mandalorian and Grogu. Working on a Star War, with this group of degenerate artists… what an honor.

Sorry if you missed me in the credits, they labeled us all “Digital Artists”. If by digital they mean fingers- then yeah, I used the heck outta my digits making that set model and helping on those robo puppets :)

Another exceptional story and our first foreign Official Selection for Sustain Film Festival's second edition; The Farmer's Daughter is a sensitive tale of resilience and sustainability in both story and substance 🌱

Dir. Melissa Bloom | US | 2025
@sistersbloomstudios

🎞️ An eco-conscious stop-motion animated film about a daughter who strives to save her father’s failing conventional farm using regenerative farming practices.

🎬 Melissa is the founder of The Sisters Bloom, an eco-conscious stop-motion animation studio in Kalispell, Montana. After working for several years in Hollywood, on projects such as Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken and David O’Russell’s American Hustle, Melissa stepped away and embarked on a holistic healing journey alongside her sister, learning first hand that human health is directly related to our environment. She realized that it wasn’t the art form of stop-motion that was the problem, but the materials and methods that had become standard practice. Her mission is to reform the industry by replacing the toxic and wasteful practices with eco alternatives.

📽️ Screening at Sustain Film Festival's second edition 🌱🌱

On our short film, The Farmer’s Daughter, we experimented with homemade clay for eyelids instead of the conventional plasticine clay. We pigmented it with @naturalearthpaint pigments to match the skin tone of each puppet. We then had animator @lilebile create silicone eyelid molds so that we could melt and cast new eyelids as-needed instead of hand-forming them each time. Since our stage space can often be a bit cold, @cdook had the brilliant idea of keeping the eyelids under a heat lamp so they were soft enough to form to the puppet’s eyes throughout animation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can see our experimentation is a team effort and we are so grateful for the animators who helped us refine this alternative!

In our short film, The Farmer’s Daughter, we have a lot of growing shots of crops. Here, @cdook animates clover by pulling the wired plants through holes in the set one by one. Though he animated it in reverse, we’ve presented it as it is in the final film.
