Smaller lengths of dimensional lumber, which would otherwise be turned into sawdust or mulch, are nailed together to form massive wood blocks. These blocks
are stacked up to create a counterweight for horizontally and vertically cantilevered NLT panels. Wooden separators placed between the wood blocks cantilever out to hold gear while people take a break.

A waterproof membrane is stretched and tightened over the roof panels to protect the lower level from the elements. It also creates a special super-tent on the upper level. Depending on the weather, the membrane can be opened or closed to provide the right climate for a tea house.

A belated share of the Forest to Forest exhibition!

Forest to Forest examines wood not as a static building material, but as a living, biogenic substance moving through ecological and temporal cycles. Through a constructed 2×4 gallery framework, decaying wood samples, and drawings tracing timber across California landscapes, the exhibition reveals wood in states of growth, use, decline, and regeneration.

Centered on research at UC Berkeley’s Russell Research Station @natureatcal, the project explores how reclaimed lumber can be returned to forest ecosystems through designed decomposition—reframing architecture’s relationship to material lifecycles and ecological systems.

Presented by the (Im)material Matters Lab @office.e.g (Liz Gálvez, Director) in collaboration with the Berkeley Wood Lab @berkeley.woodlab (Paul Mayencourt, Co-Director).

Supported by the Just Climate Futures gift fund and exhibited as part of the 2026 Just Climate Futures Exhibition: The Weather to Come: Forest, City, Fire, Cloud presented by the College of Environmental Design @ced_berkeley.

Our project team consisted of @ucberkeleyarch students: Naomi Lucia Manuel @_naomimanuel, Lincoln Ruiz-Truong @lincolnrt, and Joseph Sungjune Byun @josephbyun_70011789.

We are proud to celebrate Alma Du Solier’s Distinguished Alumni recognition from the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design! This honor reflects not only decades of meaningful work across the design profession, but also Alma’s lasting impact as a lecturer, mentor, leader, and advocate for culturally engaged public work.

Over nearly three decades, Alma has contributed to projects that weave together landscape, architecture, ecology, storytelling, and community engagement — from formative work at HOOD Design Studio, such as the de Young Museum gardens, to nationally recognized civic and cultural landscapes. Her long-standing commitment to teaching at UC Berkeley, active leadership within the Landscape Architecture Foundation, and dedication to mentorship and public life reflect the values of collaboration, cultural engagement, and public-minded design that define the College of Environmental Design.

Congratulations, Alma, on this well-deserved recognition!

Beginning to offload thesis content on here. This is my project site model.

The site is off highway 680 in Fremont. A proposed housing development that has been vacant since 2020. My project proposes an infill intervention with recycled materials in a framework that can be expanded to other vacancies.

The site’s proximity to the highway makes it a billboard in itself and using a scaffolding system as a facade creates a new billboard and a statement that the site is constantly under construction.

The site model itself is cnc’d wood. And those are indeed small billboards with real Bay Area billboard ads on them.

UC Berkeley // ARCH 200B - Grad Studio II // Anthropology Museum // 3/64” Massing Site Model

The Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology has called UC Berkeley home for over 120 years, housing nearly 4 million objects from cultures across California and the world. The museum was often considered small, dark, and it ended up closing in recent years. The museum deserved a new home worthy of what it holds.

My design is built around a single repeated move: a 12’×24’ void punched through the length of the building at intervals that increase by 4’ from west to east. The building is 48’ wide by 288’ long, so as the spacing between voids grows, so do the solids between them, producing a continuous gradient of gallery sizes and light levels. Entering from the east, visitors move through bright, double-height spaces that gradually compress into quieter, more intimate rooms, a procession that mirrors the act of moving deeper into a collection. The transition between each void and solid is marked by perforated walls that filter and diffuse the light, creating a moment of threshold before each new thick, solid, tomb-like space. A final skylit stair at the west end closes the journey and returns visitors to the outside. The same ordering logic carries through every floor, giving the entire building a single, legible rhythm.

The bottom floor contains classrooms, study library spaces, offices, archive, and maker space in the courtyard. The top floor contains art studios and a lecture hall. There is also cafe and outdoor spaces connected to the Anthropology and Art Practice building on campus.
