Yesterday I completed my 3rd Pinellas Trail Challenge-- a 46 mile ultramarathon spanning Pinellas County in brutal heat. This was also my 3rd Summer Slam, completing the series of the 3 ultras each summer for the last 3 years.

The race starts at the Rowdies stadium at 630am in St. Pete and slowly creeps north to Brighter Days in Tarpon Springs, and then back down to the finish at Weaver Park in Dunedin. I was fortunate to see Rita at mile 2 and Jim met up with me a few miles later to help me get through the day. Andriana, Orlando, and eventually Karolina also crewed me and everyone spent time stuffing ice everywhere.

For this race, it's not the miles, it's the heat. There are volunteers at aid stations and throughout the course helping, cheering, and wanting you to succeed. The crowd support is unmatched.

I had plans to run the last 10 miles with Evan, which is our tradition. But Evan had been tracking my location and realized that I was slowing down and at risk of missing my cutoff. There's a lot of math at play, and he was making decisions for 7:30pm in the 3:00 hour. He ran out from our meeting point to run me in to the turn-around and then back to the finish, this 13 miles with him were some of the fastest in my race. Evan knew I had time to make up from when I was sick, and he got me there.

The turn-around gave me a huge boost. Heather, Jacek, and the BD run club really go out of their way to pick you up and leave you better than when you arrived.

This is so much more than miles, but it's about constantly dealing with the heat, consistently eating gels, hydrating, sunblock, charging headphones, phones, and communicating your needs to your crew. It's so much planning, so many supplies, and so many easy ways that you can fail.
I'm not good at thinking in that last part of the race but I was in very good hands with Jim and my crew. Jim put in over 70 miles on his bike, and he was tired, hungry, and also suffering in the heat. He put my needs first--as he always does. I went way off-plan and he was there to get me through it without question.
Couldn't have gotten this done without you all. I'm grateful beyond words. ❤️❤️❤️
