5 years of living and working in Vancouver. A lot has changed over the years but the truth is that it was incredibly easy for me to settle from the prairies since we are a pretty sturdy stock. I still think it is funny that people still try to convince me that 5°C is colder in Vancouver than -40°C with windchill is in Edmonton. I have made a lot of new friends and joined new communities while I've been here. I need more photos of me with friends though, I've noticed that I tend to continue my existence as a background character or so it would seem. I'm hoping to celebrate more anniversaries here in Vancouver. #Vancouver #anniversary #queerart #indigenous #embroidery

The leaves are changing, the ginkgo is smelling, and it really feels like fall! We hope you’re wrapped up and warm as we wrap up this month with more free and low-cost events happening in and around Vancouver's Chinatown! This year, the Double Ninth Festival 重陽節 (cung4joeng4 zit3 | chóngyáng jié), or the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar falls during this period on October 18. Like Ching Ming 清明 (cing1ming4 | qīngmíng) in the spring, this festival is often observed by visiting and cleaning the graves of ancestors. Other activities include hiking to high elevations and enjoying chrysanthemum tea; this is an opportunity to honour elders, remember ancestors, and spend time with family. While they didn’t make it into the graphic, we want to give an honourable mention to events including: Chongyang Ritual at Mountain View Cemetery from 2:00pm-4:00pm on Saturday, October 17 hosted by @chinatownhakkahouse with @chinesedignity; and free admission for seniors 65+ at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden on Sunday, October 18 in honour of the Double Ninth Festival. And as you attend this month's events or look for chrysanthemum flowers for tea, you can partake in this week’s auspicious activity: Chew on colourful candies from Chinatown dried goods stores. Reminisce about an old childhood favourite, or maybe try something new! The graphic includes a word of the week, 驚 geng1 in Cantonese or jīng in Mandarin, meaning “Scared”, as well as the upcoming solar term on the Chinese Calendar, being 霜降 Frost Descends starting on October 23, soeng1gong3 in Cantonese or shuāngjiàng in Mandarin. The graphic notes that OCtober 18 is the Double Ninth Festival 重陽節 (cung4joeng4 zit3 | chóngyáng jié) and October 31 is Halloween. This title slide indicates that the post is highlighting upcoming Chinatown events, with further information on the following page/slide.

I’ve really appreciated the many conversations I’ve had with friends, colleagues, visitors about topographical maps, tectonic plate movements, pop-up performance and what it means to engage with audience in public spaces. A recent collaboration with Ghinwa Yassine, with projection mapping support by Avideh Saadatpajouh. I created the sound design and composition using rubble and castings recovered from the artist’s family home in Lebanon following recent bombings. My approach was to bring these fragments gently into motion through piezos and contact microphones, allowing their textures and resonances to emerge. Catch the work at Centre A as part of Rituals for Unstable Ground, alongside artists Romi Kim and Xinwei Che.
