MATTHEW

A moment in time, a figure in clay.

Three hours of sculpting from life, condensed into one minute. Watch a simple lump of terracotta clay take shape, capturing the movement, form and presence of the human figure.

During the session, Matthew slowly rotated through a full turn, allowing me to observe and sculpt the figure from every angle.

Created at @the_art_stables under the watchful eye of @jessmiller.

I mainly plan to use Photopolymer etching for collage, but this case I’ve used a photograph as the only source. Quite a romantic and optimistic image, taken in June 2023 in Norfolk. The city of London skyline painted from under an oak tree on the slopes of Alexandra palace. The tree offered shade on a hot sunny day during the summer of 26. I sat just above the pitch and putt golf course in the park

London, captured in the moment.

Painted in the open air.

A familiar skyline through the eyes of a painter

Brush in hand, the Thames flowing by, and London’s iconic architecture unfolding beneath an endless blue sky. This latest piece was painted as always plein air — directly on location, capturing the light, atmosphere and energy of the city as it happened.

Not just a view of London, but a moment in time, translated into paint.

“Leadenhall market”

One of Londons oldest markets dating from the 14th century.
After a long walk from old street I found a decent view of the market. After about an hour a van parked in front of me which restricted the heart of the view. I’ll come again to finish off this painting. Next time I’ll wear a coat and maybe some gloves it’s all of a sudden turned king cold, when you’re sitting in the shade.

A couple of pints of Abbot ale and I’m heading home go watch the spuds loose.

I’m never happy with my street paintings but they’re a great starting point.

Further exploring this shape as a basis for composition. Once again working with a random selection of colours which turn out to be beautifully harmonious. The only difficulty with this print was deciding which way up it went - it seemed to work in all 4 orientations! I think this is the right way!
