I’m not a huge fan of L&B Spumoni Gardens, which is a story for another day, but this slice of their tomato pie helped me get through NYCC on Saturday. Thank you, Jimmy Palmiotti! 🍅🥧

I then closed out the con yesterday with a real pizza from Joe’s! 🗽🍕

Can’t come to Connecticut and not have pizza! A white clam pie with bacon from Pepe’s, no less! My favorite since childhood. The original location is still THE spot to enjoy it, obviously, but the Mohegan Sun location is one of their best chain locations at keeping the quality consistent, IMO. (Danbury too.) Comix Roadhouse here has some great local beers on tap this weekend too. Loved Tox’s Lyme Lager! 🎰🍕🍻

Stopped by the acclaimed Del Rossi’s before leaving Philadelphia, the only cheesesteak spot in the city recognized by the Michelin guide. It was a damn good cheesesteak, with a wonderful meat & cheese balance, the thicker chop on the beef making for a good bite with their chunky onions. But I found their house-made bread, which they’re noted for, to be a bit lacking, almost gummy, which was unfortunate. But still well worth the trip! (Thanks for the photo assist, @mutsumi_nyc!) I’ve eaten a lot of cheesesteaks around Philly and know everyone has a favorite, so what’s yours?!🔔🧀🥩🥖🤤

Started the new year with the Notorious B.E.E.F. and a dry Plymouth martini at Hawksmoor NYC! Just perfect. Available daily on their bar menu. Now back to the diet. Happy 2026!🗽🍔🍸🎍

Huge thanks to all the comic book and food fans who stopped by my table at Terrificon this weekend to pick up the Connecticut pizza postcard illustrated by @chrissiezullo and @uminga720! As CT has been declared “Home of the Pizza Capital of the United States”, I took the opportunity to list my three favorite pies at my three favorite pizzerias. For the food-focused folks who were unable to come to the show and get a card, the spots I chose are…

- The Spicy Shrimp Casino pizza at Zuppardi’s Apizza in West Haven

- The White Pie with Clams, Bacon & Fresh Garlic at Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria in New Haven

- The BBQ Brisket Pizza customized with added Italian sausage at BAR in New Haven

I enjoyed debating these choices with locals from around Connecticut, as well as eaters from around the country. Didn’t know so many passionate Chicagoans turned out for this show. Sorry, deep dish!

Pizza preferences are all very personal, with people’s opinions based on a combination of taste, nostalgia and emotion. These three pies are MY favorites and I loved listening to others who agreed, as well as those who didn’t and were happy to tell me where and what I should be eating when I travel in the future. Thanks to everyone who chimed in, in person and online. The debate will continue and that’s the whole fun of food finding! ❤️🍕

While I usually go classic with clams, switched things up yesterday and went for a white pie with shrimp, bacon and fresh garlic at Frank Pepe’s!

Battimelli’s A&S Italian Fine Foods has been serving sandwiches and Italian specialities in Fairfield center for 32 years, but recently went viral courtesy of their “Kickin’ Chicken” Buffalo grinder. Stopped by with @steve_agnew_ct to pick up lunch on the way to my parents’ house and the place was packed! Line moved quickly though so had my Italian combo and famous chicken cutlet before too long. Don’t sleep on some of their deli counter classics either, like the grilled long hot peppers, marinated artichoke hearts, white anchovies and mushroom salad (not pictured). Got some of their housemade sausage for this weekend as well, which I’ll share soon.

Looking at all the hype Danny & Coops Cheesesteaks here in NYC has been getting, the majority of it is focused (understandably) on Bradley Cooper, so I wanted to show a little love to co-owner/baker/chef Danny DiGiampietro. Danny owns and runs the renowned Angelo’s Pizzeria in Philadelphia, which makes my favorite cheesesteak, and where he first met the voice of Rocket Raccoon, who is also a big fan of his. I try and hit Angelo’s for sandwiches wherever I’m in Philly and am never disappointed. And for me, it’s all about the bread: Danny’s famous seeded hoagie roll. While Angelo’s opened in an ex-Sarcone’s Bakery storefront, and rumor had it he got the rolls from them, Danny bakes everything fresh in-house daily. (And supposedly does the same in Manhattan.) The effort pays off when you bite through the crunchy crust into the pillowy bread, no matter what you choose to fill it with. My “must order” menu items are the cheesesteak, alternating between Cooper’s Sharp cheese or their house-made “long hot Whiz”, and The Pops, an Italian combo with prosciutto, soppressata, dry cured capicola, mortadella and sharp provolone. You will not be disappointed with either! (Feel bad I still have yet to try their pizza or roast pork though.) Lines at Angelo’s get quite long, well before they open at 11am, and they do sell out once the bread is gone, so I highly recommend calling ahead as they do take phone orders. If you can get through. Cash only, takeout only. So next time you’re in Philly, make the pilgrimage to Angelo’s to taste for yourself why Bradley fell in love with Danny’s cheesesteaks!
