Do you know this Luxembourgish tradition✨🕯?

Every year on 2 February, Luxembourg celebrates Liichtmëssdag (Candlemas), where children walk through their neighborhoods carrying lanterns 🏮 In small groups, they go from door to door, singing a traditional song to ask for candy 🍬 or a bit of money 💰 (like you can hear sung *beautifully 😆* by me, the song starts with "Léiwer Härgottsblieschen" 🎶) We call this tradition "liichten"✨️

Liichtmëssdag is the eve of St. Blaise’s Day (3 February), and the tradition is now linked to Saint Blaise, who is believed to protect against illnesses and to provide the population with a sufficient amount of food (hence the children ask for "Speck an Ierbessen", ➡️ bacon and peas, in the song) 🥓🫛 However, the origins of this holiday go back even further to pre-Christian times 😊

In the past, children carried real candles on the end of wooden sticks🕯On the photos from the 1960's you can see in the video, they actually put candles inside the lanterns and it was not uncommon for lanterns to burst into flames 😅 So, for safety reasons, these were later replaced with electric bulbs💡

Unlike in France, Belgium, or French-speaking Switzerland, where 2 February is La Chandeleur and celebrated with crêpes 🥞, this is not a tradition in Luxembourg 😊 However, because many people in Luxembourg have French or Belgian roots 🇫🇷🇧🇪, and quite a few of them also work in marketing here, you might still see social media posts from local brands featuring crêpes on this day - I'm not saying this is a bad thing, as both traditions can co-exist, but I just hope they will also feature more posts about liichten this year ☺️

Happy Liichtmëssdag and don't forget to prepare candy and some coins for the children 😁
