POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

HOUSE BY HOUSE | BATTALION 7

We’re wrapping up our tour of Battalion 7 at Firehouse 39, known as the “Arboretum Express.”

Firehouse 39 opened Dec. 20, 2008, as an infill firehouse built to improve response reliability as south Charlotte continued to grow.

Today, Firehouse 39 is home to Engine 39, Ladder 39 and Battalion Chief 7.

Its 7.08-square-mile response area includes Raintree, Wessex Square, Hempstead and Beverly Crest. Crews serve an area known for large homes, winding residential streets and busy commercial development around the Arboretum.

Ladder 39 was placed in service in 2024 to strengthen ladder company coverage across south Charlotte.

During fiscal year 2025, crews from Firehouse 39 responded to approximately 3,500 incidents.

And with that, our House by House tour of Battalion 7 is complete. From Firehouse 9 to Firehouse 39, we’ve taken you across the largest geographic battalion in Charlotte Fire.

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, at approximately 3:20 p.m., the Charlotte Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Pineville Fire Department, responded to a reported house fire at 8437 Tifton Rd.

Multiple 911 calls received by Charlotte Fire Alarm Communications reported a kitchen fire inside the home, prompting the automatic declaration of a Working Fire assignment.

Charlotte Engine 24-C Shift arrived to find fire showing from the side of a one-story, single-family dwelling. Pineville FD Engine 1 arrived shortly afterward, secured a hydrant and went to work alongside Charlotte Ladder 32 conducting vertical ventilation. Engine 32 stretched a second hoseline to assist Engine 24 with the fire attack.

Under the command of Charlotte Fire Department Battalion Chief Derek Parks, firefighters mounted an aggressive attack while operating in extremely hot and humid conditions. Due to the extreme and dangerous heat and the need for additional personnel, a second alarm was struck to bring additional manpower to the scene.

Mecklenburg County EMS responded with a supervisor, two ambulances and the Mass Casualty Bus to provide firefighter rehabilitation, hydration and cooling during the incident.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 25 minutes. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation by the Charlotte Fire Department Investigation Task Force.

Working Fire on Highclare Court

At approximately 5:15 p.m. this afternoon, Matthews Fire & EMS and Charlotte Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the Highclare Court area.

Engine 12 was already in the neighborhood to install a smoke detector at a nearby residence and arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch. Crews reported a light haze upon arrival. Car 11 arrived approximately one minute later, assumed command, and, after observing smoke coming from the eaves, declared a working fire.

Engine 12 forced entry into the home, rescued the family’s dog, and quickly advanced a hose line to attack the fire. Charlotte Ladder 39 provided vertical ventilation by cutting an opening in the roof, allowing crews to safely remove heat and smoke. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all responding personnel, the fire was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes.

Fortunately, no one was home when the fire occurred. However, the residence was equipped with working smoke alarms, which activated as designed. This serves as another important reminder that properly installed and maintained smoke alarms provide critical early warning and can make a significant difference in protecting lives and property.

“We are grateful for the teamwork demonstrated by all responding agencies and are especially thankful for the safe rescue of the family’s dog.” Said Assistant Chief Gurian.

A lightning strike was the cause of this fire.

I never know what kind of moment I'll witness when I leave the house with a camera.

Sometimes it's a working fire.
Sometimes it's a firefighter sharing a quiet moment.
Sometimes it's a rescue, a training exercise, a ceremony, or a community coming together.

These are just a few of the moments I've been fortunate enough to document over the years.

Thank you to every department and first responder who has allowed me to document these moments over the years.

If you enjoy seeing the people and stories behind public safety through my lens, follow along. There's a lot more to come.

On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at approximately 11:47 a.m., the Charlotte Fire Department and Matthews Fire & EMS Engine 22 & Battalion 1 responded to a reported structure fire at 1826 Nantucket Lane.

CFD Engine 39 arrived at Providence Court Apartments with smoke showing from the garage of a two-story apartment building. The crew of Engine 39 made the initial stretch and began attacking the garage fire, while Ladder 39 and firefighters from Engine 19 conducted a primary search of the building.

Firefighters safely removed two dogs and a cat, all of which were unharmed.

Despite the hot summer conditions, crews contained the fire to the garage without extension into the living areas and had the incident under control within 11 minutes.

One firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force. @charlottefire @thefirenews #charlottefiredepartment #charlottenc #garagefire #firephotography #firstresponders

📍 Charlotte Fire Department Station 39 on Providence Road in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Station 39 opened on December 20, 2008, as an infill station designed to help the Charlotte Fire Department keep pace with the rapid residential and commercial growth occurring throughout South Charlotte.

The firehouse is known as the “Arboretum Express” because of its proximity to the Arboretum Shopping Center and the area’s well-known traffic congestion. The nickname serves as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the crews who must navigate the area’s notorious gridlock while responding to emergencies.

Station 39 is currently home to Battalion 7, Engine 39 and Ladder 39. Ladder 39 entered service in June 2024, expanding the department’s aerial coverage and rescue capabilities throughout the growing Arboretum area and surrounding communities.

Drone photography offers a unique way to showcase the firehouses, apparatus and people who serve our communities—from an entirely new perspective.

Battalion Chief Matt Yost arrived to find an SUV that had crashed into Victoria’s Brows & Beauty.

Firefighters from Station 39 evaluated the structural integrity of the building and searched the affected business and surrounding businesses for anyone who may have been injured. Their inspection determined that the vehicle had not struck any load-bearing structural components, and no one inside any of the businesses was injured.

Mecklenburg County EMS also responded. Fortunately, neither the driver nor the passenger inside the SUV was injured.

The affected portion of the building was secured and taped off before the scene was turned over to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for further investigation. @charlottefire @thefirenews #charlottefiredepartment #charlottenc #vehicleintobuilding #firstresponders #firephotography

On Sunday evening, June 14th at approximately 21:53 hrs, Matthews Fire & EMS, along with Charlotte Fire, were alerted for a structure fire in the 9500 blk of Hunting Ct. in Matthews. Units arrived within seven minutes, finding smoke coming from the garage of the structure. Entry into the living area found that the fire had not yet extended from the attached garage into the home. Entry was forced through a back door of the garage. Firefighters located and controlled the seat of the fire located and controlled in just over 10 minutes after arrival. Additional companies removed the garage door and thoroughly searched the home, finding no extension beyond the garage. Matthews and partner agencies train thoroughly for these types of incidents, ensuring rapid response to and mitigation of incidents.

Investigation of the incident found that the homeowner stated that crackling was heard as smoke could be seen from the front of the home. Upon this discovery, the home was evacuated and 911 called from a safe location. Crews on site found a lithium battery charger with the remains of a lithium ion battery pack at the seat of the fire. Homeowners are strongly urged to remove lithium ion batteries from chargers once charging is complete. The home did have working smoke alarms, however they did not activate until after fire crews arrived on scene, allowing smoke to enter into the living area.
