POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

New work from a sculptural collage series inspired by the poem “Epigenetic Gall” — which I started as a participant in “Direct Message,” a beautiful project by Claire Connolly.

Claire’s concept involved group meetings with free write sessions that led to three more paintings and an anthology of connected poems that is available for sale at FITZ ($20)!

My poem (about the possibility of inherited grit fueling me during fascism) led to me co-art directing a related still life that became a reference for this glorious painting by Claire, where my poem is featured.

You can take home beautiful color prints of the paintings, which are in the book.

Thursday (tomorrow) is the last day to see these and the rest of the “Direct Message” at FITZ Books and Waffles (1462 Main St)!

Come out tomorrow (Aug 13) for the closing celebration and stay for the waffles (or ice cream if that’s your jam)!

You can also pick up a FREE copy of The Buffalo Contrarian at FITZ!

The summer edition has what I think is a very balanced article by Matt Austin covering my legal issues stemming from wheatpasting ZELL NO! in protest of Jeremy Zellner to the ground at polling places during the June primary.

I’ll share the full list of places to pick up your copy of The Buffalo Contrarian soon — there are ten other fine local bookstores, community hubs, and libraries!

See you tomorrow? 🤞

I got arrested for art again… twice.

This isn’t like my “performance vandalism” at Charging Bull in 2017. My free speech has been attacked BUT it’s backfired spectacularly.

Instead of silencing me, my anti-Jeremy Zellner wheatpastes have received wide exposure and ZELL NO! is now a common refrain.

Tune in to Think Twice Radio tonight at 7 – I’ll be chatting with writers from The Buffalo Contrarian about the effort to eliminate Jeremy Zellner and his corrupting influence from the Erie County Democratic Committee, plus other major topics like the future of Ranked Choice Voting.

You can find the livestream for Think Twice radio on Facebook.

The show will be available to watch afterward too.

TONIGHT! 7 PM!

“Salon: Artalk” featuring artist Claire Connolly at FITZ Books!

Claire will be discussing her social practice project “Direct Message” which has resulted in large scale paintings, a collaborative poetry anthology, and additional artwork on view at FITZ until the end of July.

The talk will be followed by a conversation with the audience! (“The audience is the panel.”)

I participated in “Direct Message” and it was an extremely profound experience as a writer and visual artist!

Claire put out an open invite to “anyone curious about making use of their creative capacities, regardless of artistic credentials” for writing workshops that took place over six months.

To start, she presented a painting of hers with an original poem and Hy Carrel of Community Canvases facilitated free-writes.

Claire selected a poem from each session to feature in the next painting of the series. The corresponding paintings were informed on still life scenes that were created in collaboration with the participant poet.

My poem, “Epigenetic Gall,” was written during a dark time in history – the day after Renee Renee Macklin Good was shot — in response to Dr. Steve Peraza’s poem and Claire’s painting, “Aura Loss.” I was humbled further when that work was followed by Kaitlyn Lowe’s “Indulge Me.”

Collaborating with Claire on this still life was a true (for lack of a better term) artist bucket list item: I’ve long wanted to capture a subversive scene of substances!

I’ve been calling this combination of steak, cold fudge sundaes, and other items my “Cornucopia of Crutches, January 2026.”

I’ll tell you about the journey this poem has taken me on later! (So much writing and new art coming out of it!)

*********************

Come out tonight at 7 to hear more about this fascinating project by the brains behind it all: Claire Connolly!

Admission is free, or Donate If You’d Like (D.I.Y.L.)!

“Direct Message” by Claire Connolly will be on view at FITZ Books and Waffles (1462 Main St) until June 30.

The “Direct Message” poetry anthology is available for sale at FITZ for $20. Aerial photo of a still life featuring a table with someone dining on steak, an ice cream sundae, many bottles of medication, and nicely rolled joints of marijuana.

HELLO! Come to FITZ Books this Friday for a very special event: an art opening and book launch with live author readings!

I will be presenting new poetry, including one that’s featured in an oil painting, and some visual art pieces thanks to the Buffalo-rooted, creative experiment “Direct Message” by Claire Connolly.

Last year, Connolly put out an open invite to “anyone curious about making use of their creative capacities, regardless of artistic credentials” for writing workshops led by Hy Carrel of Community Canvases. The goal was to gather with people to explore the impact of art on the human spirit, including questions about how tech and social media impact it.

Over a period of six months, a cohort met to make use of oil paintings by Connolly that include a poem on a phone screen. These paintings and poems served as an alternative, analog messaging platform.

Almost as proof of Connolly’s lead concept — about the “human tendency toward creativity” — the gatherings led to an explosion of additional writing and art.

The entire experience was very special and downright profound. I am delighted to have participated and cannot wait to share more details about what this work inspired me to create!)

If you’re walking through the Elmwood area, keep an eye out for Claire’s garage mural — it’s just one sample of her painting abilities — and you can grab a show flyer too!

I am very excited and gratified to be able to celebrate these 17 people and the work we did together. Who can say how each poem, image, or brushstroke shaped it, but I’d rather not ruin it by trying. Please join us on Friday June 5th at @fitz_books_and_waffles to launch our book, open our art exhibit, and see some live poetry readings.

DIRECT MESSAGE, a four-painting series fueled by writing workshops, comes directly from the City of Good Neighbors. Its contributors are our community-mates, and (with one exception 😉) the objects in my paintings are from local estate sales. In true Buffalo fashion, we’ve made something for you, our neighbors, to show up and contribute to. 💚

From these folks to you, hope to see you there:
Danielle Carlo, Hy Carrel, Claire Connolly, Courtney Frances Fallon, Kamau R.E. Fields, Rabbi Yonina Foster, Cindy Jusko, Solana Kayembe, Eddie Kwame Kwarteng, Cassie Lipsitz, Kaitlyn Lowe, Jennifer Merlette, Dr. Steve Peraza, Renea Ravenell, Claire Schneider, Pam Turner, Charlotte Von Adler

A special thank you to Hy Carrel of Community Canvases for adapting his @kindfools WRITE ON! workshops for this project and lending it his considerable skills.

Please enjoy: “Cuntface #4: Like a Hole in My Head,” 2009-2026, mixed media with acrylic on canvas, 5" x 5" x 1.5" [Auction item 295]

You have until 9:30pm to bid on this and ~700 other 5" x 5" art pieces in Buffalo Arts Studios Live on Five 2026.

This fundraiser is an excellent opportunity for art collectors, especially folks on a budget!

Live on Five is also a unique opportunity to snag pieces from artists in a medium/media they don’t normally use. In 2024, I won an amazing collage by Rebecca
Schwarzberg (@becca.art.dolls) who normally works in sculpture.

Head to my Linktree to connect with the event page and you’ll also find the links to each of the four artworks I have in the auction.

Or visit @buffaloartsstudio for additional info!

This collage features an iconic couple but is celebrating my rejection of compulsive heteronormativity. (Fun fact: Lucy filed for divorce as soon as the show was over.)

It takes a lot of work to resist the normalcies of patriarchy but after decades of denial, I'm leaning into my queerness. I’m bisexual by birth but a lesbian by choice. [Actually pansexual but I like the alliteration…]

I was disinterested in being queer because of the hypersexualization of bi women and also because of the perceived safety in being in proximity to men. This security is false and I am thankful that I resisted the trappings of cis straight marriage with children.

Besides the fact that straight cis male partners (especially white dudes) are statistically the most dangerous for women and girls, there are also the labor inequities. I resented the realities of mental load before I knew what it was and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Sure, not all men — but might as well be for all I care. Not in my bed.

And I know there are men out there who are reading this and thinking that this is a super cunty point of view… and I agree! “Cuntface #4: Like a Hole in My Head” by artist Courtney Frances Fallon. It is an abstract self-portrait with text about trepanation, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. Ricky is holding a wad of cash and Lucy has a heart-shaped vagina head.

This self-portrait celebrates the ability to thrive without a homebase.

The still in this collage is from the fun and fascinating character exposition of the titular character in “Desperately Seeking Susan.” I credit the film for showing it’s possible to be elegant while transient. Of course, this is a precarious lifestyle even that is palatable because of Susan’s various privileges — which I share.

The way Susan (played by Madonna) utilizes the Port Authority public bathroom and lockers has lived rent free in my brain for almost 30 years.

I eventually employed these tricks while traveling and struggling as a sometimes housing insecure artist. Also similar to Susan, I have found myself in many sticky situations over the years — at home and abroad. “Sticky” is used in jest here.

I’m working on a memoir entitled: “Lethal, Illegal, or Both” — it will feature stories where I should have died, gone to jail (if not prison), or both.

This is a favorite dinner party game of mine that some fellow subversives and I came up with while sharing stories in my living room back one day. I highly recommend it. Even squares have stories where they should have died.

Anyway, regularly landing on your feet despite making terrible life decisions, like letting your lease run out and then choosing to be unemployed without savings, wandering Poland for three months hoping to snag enough freelance ghostwriting gigs to sustain you, is super cunty. “Cuntface #3: Houseless Habits” by artist Courtney Frances Fallon. It is an abstract self-portrait with a map of Ecuador, Madonna as Susan Thomas cleaning up in a public bathroom, and a vagina painted to look like a heart for a head.

“Type A Party Animal” represents my time in college, which got into full swing after I transferred to Binghamton University as a sophomore.

Upon starting school, I became unrecognizable from the disruptive punk I was from kindergarten to twelfth grade. I did all the reading that was humanly possible and went to every class, sitting front row center. I regularly shocked acwuaintances from class when I ran into them at a party or bar,

Work hard, play hard.

As time has gone on, I’ve come to recognize the duality in my personality: a fastidiousness when tackling subversive tasks

I found my footing as a college student and still maintain a bit of Mary Poppins energy: you never know what I will pull out of my bag, literally and proverbially.

Nothing cuntier than being a total contradiction who is good at being bad. “Cuntface #2: Type A Party Animal” by artist Courtney Frances Fallon. It is an abstract self-portrait with text from a psychology textbook, Mary Poppins singing to a bird, and a vagina painted like a mouth smoking a cigarette for the head.
