As many of you are already well aware, recent changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) saw the proportion of assistance provided to students change from 85 percent non-repayable grants to 75 percent repayable loans overnight, in many cases AFTER students had received original funding calculations under the outgoing proportions. This change, as well as other recent changes to provincial education policy like Bill 33, have prompted province-wide organizing by students to oppose measures that make education less accessible and negatively impact hundreds of thousands of students across Ontario. The UWSA is proud to be participating in the provincial Day of Action organized by the Canadian Federation of Students Ontario @cfson and taking place on campuses all over Ontario on November 5th. At the University of Windsor, our action will begin at 10:00am at the CAW Student Centre Courtyard where students - and faculty/community supporters - will gather, have the option to make signs, sign a large support banner, and enjoy hot beverages and snacks until 11:30am, when we will begin a march through campus grounds with our signs to show our opposition to harmful education policy. During the October 9 meeting of the University Senate, thanks to solidarity between the UWSA, GSS, OPUS, and WUFA, as well as support from sympathetic members of senior leadership, a motion granting all students academic amnesty for the whole day of November 5 was passed with nearly unanimous consent. This means that *as long as students participating in the Day of Action email their professor(s) no less than 48 hours in advance of November 5* they will not incur any academic penalties (participation marks, assignment due dates, tests, etc.) due to their participation. If you have any questions about Ontario education policy, the Day of Action, or academic amnesty, please do not hesitate to contact the UWSA President, or Vice-President, Student Advocacy! We will not forget, we will keep the pressure up and push for accessible, affordable education in Ontario ✊ @cfsfcee

Practical Nursing Students at the Centre for Nursing Studies voted on Thursday and Friday of last week overwhelmingly in favour of joining the Canadian Federation of Students! After 30 years of these students being unrepresented by any union, and having no student health and dental insurance, the Federation is incredibly excited to include these students in our provincial and national student movement. We look forward to working with you to advocate together, develop your plan, and introduce you to other student leaders across the province and country!
