Gertie’s “Ornament & Information” convenes a cohort of artists whose practices emerge from and expand a long-standing intellectual exchange between Chicago and Vienna. From modern architecture to mid-century economic thought, the reciprocating influence between these two cities has never been of a one-to-one nature; rather, it is a product of intellectual developments from one city being then synthesized by the other. Works by Chicago-based artists Gaylen Gerber, Max Guy, Devin T. Mays, Isabelle Frances McGuire, B. Ingrid Olson, Micah Schippa Wildfong and Diane Simpson are paired with Vienna-based artists Anna-Sophie Berger, Benjamin Hirte, Miriam Stoney, Valentina Triet and Walter Pichler. Following an exuberant opening last week during EXPO CHICAGO, critics remarked:

“[Gareth Kaye] curates ‘Ornament & Information’, which explores the creative interplay between Chicago and Vienna to make a case for the experimental potential of cities situated at the edges of commercial circuits,” says Camille Bacon for Frieze. “As Gertie’s founder Abby Pucker told me, the free-to-attend exhibition ‘is for anyone who lives and works in these cities and is impacted by the infrastructure around us.’” @camillegbacon @friezeofficial

“Dynamo cultural entrepreneur and patron Abby Pucker has made her annual exhibitions timed with EXPO CHICAGO a staple of the city’s art week,” Elisa Carollo said in the Observer. “[A] reference to both Adolf Loos’s rejection of ornament and the persistence of surface as structure, signal and excess, from the Vienna Secession to Chicago’s Gilded Age and modernist architecture, the show traces parallels visible across history, from developments in modern architecture and supply-side economic theory to the social and aesthetic tendencies that have shaped each city and the artists in them… The show is the second exhibition produced by Pucker’s curatorial platform Gertie, as it completes its transition from a civic cultural agency model to a platform for contemporary art and performance.” @elisartgal @observer

Ornament & Information is on view at the Chicago Cultural Center through July 19. Installation photos: Paul Levack.

What began as a family vacation became an unexpected journey through France’s living cultural landscape. From Hockney at the Fondation Louis Vuitton to Othoniel in Avignon and Invader mosaics tucked along quiet streets, art found @cgn_ginny at every turn — historic, contemporary, monumental, and small.

A reminder that when you travel, the most meaningful encounters often aren’t on a checklist at all.

Art on the walls, on the plates, and in every detail.

Publisher Ginny Van Alyea steps inside Esmé, where Chef Jenner Tomaska, Katrina Bravo, and artist Lefty Out There transform fine dining into an immersive, philanthropic art experience. With a Michelin announcement days away and a new Apple TV+ series shining a light on the restaurant, Esmé is redefining what a cultural space can be in Chicago.

This June the Art Institute’s major summer exhibition, Gustave Caillebotte: Painting His World, will present the Impressionist’s work in the context of the era and the social circles in which he lived. Caillebotte (1848–1894) is closely associated with his monumental painting of a French street scene on a gray and inclement day, Paris Street; Rainy Day, a work that is the crown jewel of the Art Institute’s permanent collection as well as this exhibition.

The show promises to expand how visitors see the artist’s own life and what inspired him, allowing us to appreciate intimate elements of Caillebotte’s world while also presenting questions about what the artist himself saw and wanted viewers to see in his paintings.

Gloria Groom, Chair and Winton Green Curator, Painting and Sculpture of Europe, The Art Institute of Chicago took time this spring to give us a preview of what we can expect from Gustave Caillebotte: Painting His World.
