A glorious September day out in our clients’ gardens with Isabel! ✨️🍂

She’s just planted this beautiful apple tree in our lovely client’s potager garden 🍎 stunning specimen from @frankpmatthewstrees

Autumn is the perfect season for planting - the soil is still warm, there’s plenty of rain and plants have time to establish roots before winter 🌱

Now’s a great time to plant:
🍐 Fruit trees (apple, pear, plum)
🌳 Shrubs and hedging plants
🥦 Winter veg (kale, spinach, garlic, onions)
Soon we will be planting spring bulbs (once the temperatures have cooled down a bit) 🌸

Give them a head start now and you’ll be rewarded with strong growth next year! 💚

A wonderful Blooming Scotland team day out 🌿

We caught up on all things happening in gardens and our lives before visiting a stunning open garden, owned by Elisabeth Quinn @the_joyful_garden_ , as part of the Scotland’s Garden Scheme.

Elisabeth’s cottage-style garden was bursting with roses, nepetas, verbena and dahlias – with so many cosy spots to sit and admire the views from every angle. 💐 Huge congratulations to Elisabeth for such a successful open garden! 👏✨

It was the perfect way to celebrate a thriving summer season while also planning ahead – because gardening doesn’t stop when summer ends, autumn is just as exciting! 🍂🌱

It's almost time :D

We are very much looking forward to opening up again for the 2025 season after our winter break when we open on Saturday 8th March with our usual hours of Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. We can't believe its almost that time already.

We have lots of lovely plants growing on here in the nursery to sell; old favourites and lots of new varieties to tempt you with. Trees, shrubs, fruit, perennials, shade plants, wildflowers, bamboo, conifers and grasses (herbs and alpines will be out later in March once the weather improves and water plants in April) and we are constantly bringing out new plants to the sales area.

There are lots of changes in the nursery and gardens this year, which I will explain in separate posts. Our wee shop and pot area will be stuffed full of lots of lovely items. These include plant supports, bird feeders and baths, bug hotels, garden sundries, string, gift cards, vases, gift vouchers and peat free compost. All of which are made from natural materials and recycled if possible. You can see what is available on the shop page of our website www.quercusgardenplants.co.uk

The Garden railway will be running during the summer and the timetable is on our facebook page here and website events page.
You can find out more about us in our about section here or on our website www.quercusgardenplants.co.uk

You can also find us on Facebook

The Whitmuir cafe and Whitmuir Farm Shop is open seven days a week with great coffee, cakes and lunches and tempting treats and food in the shop. You can take the circular farm walk where you can get great views of the farm, Heiland coos and the valley and Pentland Hills beyond.

Please remember that the bulk of our plants are grown here on site in the nursery in what can often be challenging conditions. We endeavour to carry a consistent stock list but often nature gets in the way and we do have propagation failures so not everything is ready or available all the time. Damage from storms, very cold spells, poor pollination the previous year and so on can lead to plants not being available and as a small team we can’t always keep the website list up to date as often as we would like.

The last couple of days have seen the Scented garden have its turn to be tidied. Isabel spent the day working on it yesterday, cutting back and lifting leaves doing a great job. Its a much bigger garden area than you think and hard to believe in a few months the ground will be completely covered with plants.

Today I finished off the last corner and then dealt with the bit behind the sweet pea planter. This has widened over time, so I've put in a wooden edge and back filled with compost then I'll sow grass seed but it looks a much neater line now. I also planted a Viburnum lantana behind the sweet pea planter which has scented flowers and makes a small tree, I grew it from seed so I am hoping it will grow and do well. I also planted an Inula hookeri here, its not scented but I am hoping it will cope with the really awful soil in the area 🤞

This time of year can be pretty dark 🌚. . But then something joyful appears from nowhere, like a wee crack of light ☀️

A reminder to be grateful for what you have & for who you are lucky enough to know.

Thank you Chair Team 🥰

Feliz Navidad

This week we have been in the clouds, literally! While many parts of the country have been enjoying heat and sunshine we, here on the hill have had nothing but grey and drizzle ☹ Despite that we are progressing well with propagation and all the tasks needing done before we close for winter. The gardens and nursery are taking on autumn tints now so it’s a good idea to see what you can plant to prolong interest through autumn into winter 🍂

~ Isabel is back from her 3 weeks away and we are glad of her company and good cheer while we work through the prop list including doing cuttings and gathering seeds. Fiona split all the Monarda in the stock beds and did cuttings of some of them on Saturday so we have plenty for sale next year and she helped with customers while I was away for the afternoon, thank you :) <3

~ We have finally seen some butterflies, but hardly any and now the swallows have taken flights I have a juvenile robin keeping me company 🦋

~ I also made a self-contained fountain feature, inspired by a recent trip away. This has caused much interest with customers, which is great, that’s what we want, is to inspire and give our customers confidence to try new things in their garden ⛲️

~ David has started dismantling our tunnel which was damaged in the January storms and he has starting building the new tunnel in its new home, exciting!

~ I re-did all the seasonal display pots , planting up new tulips and winter pansies for next spring in what I hope will be a symphony of pinks, purples and whites 🥀

~ On Saturday I was at the Newlands Centre with a stand at the their cottager event. Always good to get out and chat to customers, sell a few plants and hand out leaflets 🎋

Behind the scenes - Great excitement in the nursery today, the great annual stock bed tidy is finished, Hooray! 😁 This huge job usually takes me from the beginning of March to mid September but I got Isabel starting at one end and me at the other this year. We’ve finished 2 months earlier which leaves plenty time to get all the propagation 🌱 done for next years plants AND all the jobs we never get around to AND starting to think about building new polytunnels! This huge job involves weeding, cleaning the stockbeds, top-dressing and feeding all the plants, labelling, potting new plants and slotting them in and making the whole area a great place to shop from for all our customers. Yes our plants are spoiled but it also means we are selling good quality plants for often challenging conditions. The feedback we constantly get from customers who come back to buy more and enthuse about how well our plants have done in their gardens is testimony to all our hard work. Its also a great way for Isabel to keep learning all the plants, their names and what they require and I am hugely appreciative of all the work she has put in to getting this job done on all the weathers 🤩
