Day 4: @tomasmuellerguide from @chamonix.experience promised me something more difficult for our final day and he delivered. We climbed Arête des Cosmiques aka the Cosmic Ridge (3,842m). It’s accessed from the Chamonix midi lift for Mont Blanc. Gorgeous views, and a fun challenge.

Thinking of doing Tour du Mont Blanc?

Here are the things you should consider:

Accommodation:
Hotels and refuges fill up fast, especially for the peak season (July-August), so you should book them 6-9 months in advance.

Route & Duration:
Most hikers will go counter-clockwise, though clockwise is also possible. The full circuit is around 170 km long and it typically takes 8-12 days to complete it. You can either plan everything yourself, or use a company to do it for you. We booked the hike through @chamonix.experience and were very happy with the choice. Our 10-day itinerary worked out smoothly and the logistics were excellent.

Food:
Most of the accommodation places are either B&B or half-board (breakfast and dinner). Most of them offer to make lunch boxes for extra cost, but you can also have lunch in huts or cafes along the way. Or have it the way we did: shop ingredients in the local shop or supermarket and set up picnic any place on the trail you want.

Gear:
The amount of gear comes down to if you will carry everything yourself or pick a luggage service. We chose bag transfers because it was important for us to get the “holiday feeling” where we could relax, connect with each other and the nature. We always carried rain gear and warmer layer in our daypacks because weather in the mountains can be unpredictable and change anytime. Also, make sure to pack swimming suit as you will pass beautiful lakes, worth taking a dip to cool down.

Fitness:
You don’t need to be mountaineer or have technical skills to do the hike, however a good cardiovascular endurance and strong knees are necessary. Depending on the duration of the trip, you will be hiking on average 15-30 km a day, gaining and losing approximately 1000 meters of elevation. There are variants along the route that offer more dramatic or exposed scenery, and for those you will need a bit of experience in scrambling and steep ascent/descent. But you can also skip parts of the route by taking cable car or bus.

Flights from the UK direct to Geneva. A short drive over to Chamonix. From there we joined up with the well organised team @chamonix.experience who took care of the trip from thereon, always putting safety first.
