I’ve always been someone drawn to organic earthy sounds that have an evergreen quality to it. With the rise of AI, my draw towards organic has increased even more.

@laurengracegeis @chando.dix have made a timeless album and there’s something special in it. I started learning her song “Outside Today” this afternoon and wanted to add my own acoustic spin to it.

Genuinely one of the most common things I get asked is where do I start. I only have two mics. I don’t have great preamps. I don’t have the right gear.

Here’s the honest answer — give me a knockoff SM57 from Amazon, a Focusrite Scarlett, and a basic XLR cable and I’m confident I can get a usable drum sound for a client. Not because the gear is great. Because I know how to listen.

The most valuable tool you have isn’t your mic or your preamp. It’s your ear and your willingness to learn. Walking around a room with headphones and a mic figuring out what actually sounds good. Having the patience to move the mic before you touch an EQ. Asking yourself what the song needs before you ask yourself what sounds cool.

Listen first. Then adjust placement. Then tuning. Then how you’re playing. In that order. And to anyone just getting into this — we should be celebrating you finding your sound. Not immediately pointing out everything that’s wrong with it.

We were all there once. Remember that.

The experienced people in the room should be the most encouraging ones in it. Not the most judgmental. Stop waiting for better gear. Start learning your ears. 🤍
