“Maydena Creek” is the new solo album from Australian post-punk voyager, David Chesworth, renowned for his 80s groups Essendon Airport and Whadya Want?, alongside four decades of composition and sound art. Named after a creek beneath a Tasmanian rainforest, a recording of which briefly appears, “Maydena Creek” combines subterranean vibrations, modern distortions and surreal imagery into off-kilter but strangely catchy electronic pop with an experimental sensibility.

Issued on vinyl by @programrecords, “Maydena Creek” is an essential addition to an iconic canon. We’re proud to have it in the racks at Rocksteady Records

New solo album Maydena Creek is out today. It’s been a long journey, from initial sketches to something very special (for me). Link to digital and vinyl releases in bio.

I never end up making music that fits any particular genre, including those I personally really enjoy listening to – it seems as though I work on the periphery, in some nameless genre.

Each ‘song’ on this record came together as though I was painting pictures. Different strokes and images added and collaged until forms emerged – which, on a solo project, you can spend time doing. The source materials are a bunch of disparate sounds and novel instruments that shouldn’t really be together, but for me that was where the fun lay. The album’s classic ’70s title was from the file name of a creek recording I used on the record that I had made a while ago. The album is about nothing, but in my world, it’s somehow about everything.

Many thanks to Program Records, and Chapter Music, and the support of special folk at both labels, and to Sonia for putting up with my endless studio time....... There will be a special launch performance at Eastmint on November 28 - tickets via Humanitix

Last week I had the pleasure of chatting to Australian post-punk icon, David Chesworth about his forthcoming album Maydena Creek. David is best known for his work with Essendon Airport, Whadya Want?, Drive Time (with Bill McDonald) among many other creative projects. Him and his peers have made a huge impact on Australia’s DIY post-punk scene through releases on labels like Chapter Music and Innocent (David’s label co-founded with Philip Brophy), and programs like the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre. David’s name is one that came up constantly when I first started digging deeper into music from Australia’s underground, so it’s an honour to have him as the first guest on Sound Exchange!

Maydena Creek comes out this Friday 16th of October via @chaptermusic + @programrecords

Tune into Sound Exchange today to hear my chat with David, 12-2pm on @2ser107.3

Hypnotic minimalism, experimental songs and shimmering dream-folk spanning five decades of Melbourne’s musical underground.

Celebrating the launch of David Chesworth’s hypnotic and strangely beautiful solo record Maydena Creek — his first solo release in many years.

Renowned for his 80s groups Essendon Airport, Whadya Want? and Drive Time with Bill McDonald, as well as his composition, video and sound-art works of the last four decades, Chesworth returns with an album released on vinyl by the wonderful team at Program Records and digitally by Chapter Music.

Hinting at natural flows and geological vibrations, Maydena Creek combines these with modern distortions and surreal imagery to form a compelling, hallucinatory collection of off-kilter but strangely catchy experimental songs.
In typical Chesworth style, the music brings together the quirky 1970s Fun Machine organ and the more egg-headed Moog Subharmonicon, which draws on forgotten early-20th-century electronic instruments.

Alongside David Chesworth will be a rare performance of the seminal 1976 work Minimalism by Melbourne experimental group → ↑ →, performed by musicians Mia Alexander, Arsam Samadi, Kassie Junkeer and Clementine Girard-Foley, with direction by Philip Brophy.
Plus, shimmering atmospheric anthems and alternative minimalism from lo-fi/dream-folk specialists Who Cares.
