Reflections leading up to my cancer scan:

There is a particular kind of loneliness that comes when you believe deeply in the miraculous.

Not because you doubt that God heals.

But because you don’t.

I have watched Jesus heal.

I have watched prayers answered in ways that medicine cannot explain. I believe every word of Scripture that tells us Jesus healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, made the lame walk, and even raised the dead. I believe the Holy Spirit still moves today. I still pray boldly for miracles. I still ask for the impossible. And every time I walk into a scan, every time I hear the words “follow-up imaging,” every time fear whispers that my cancer could return, I ask the Lord to heal me completely.

I believe He can.

Wholeheartedly.

But I have also spent years standing beside hospital beds in the PICU.

I have watched parents pray with astonishing faith. I have watched churches around the world plead for healing. I have watched children and loved ones who were deeply loved die anyway.

Those two realities have never fit neatly together.

And perhaps they were never supposed to.

Somewhere along the way, a subtle narrative found its way into Christian circles.

If you just believed more…
If you prayed harder…
If your faith were bigger…
Then healing would come.

I understand where that desire comes from. We desperately want formulas because formulas make suffering feel controllable. If healing depends on my faith, then perhaps I can guarantee an outcome.

But Scripture refuses to give us that formula.

Jesus healed many.

Jesus also walked past others.

Paul raised the dead.

Paul also carried what he called a “thorn in the flesh” that God chose not to remove despite repeated prayers. Three times Paul pleaded with the Lord. Three times heaven answered not with healing but with presence:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Not despite weakness.

In weakness.

That changes everything.

As someone living after stage IV cancer, I have had to wrestle with what it means to pray expectantly without believing that unanswered healing somehow reflects deficient faith.
