Is AI changing the future of education?

This week on Good Morning LKN, we were joined by Dr. Charlitta Hatch, CMS District 1 Representative and host of The Community Classroom, to discuss how schools and colleges are adapting to a changing world.

Dr. Hatch shares why educators must embrace new technology, rethink traditional approaches, and prepare students for the future while ensuring AI helps close opportunity gaps rather than widen them.

Catch The Community Classroom Mondays at 5 PM on WSIC, and watch the full episode on YouTube, the WSIC News App, or wherever you get your podcasts!

Charlotte is the unserious little sister of large southern cities. Recently, her unserious shenanigans include suspending, reinstating, and then terminating the longest serving superintendent the city has had in a decade.

The BOE finally released their final report from the investigation into former Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill.

Here are my hot takes on some of the statements found in the report:

1. The report states that the cost to date, as of September 24th, 20226, for the investigation is $379,000. The reports adds context by stating, “this represents .018% of the district’s 2026-2027 operating budget”.

Maybe the actual cost of the investigation is only .018% of the whole budget. However, with $380,000 the district could have added 3 new counselor positions or purchased 150 pallets of paper, a resource CMS can’t guarantee its teachers.

I wish I was surprised about how out of touch the board has become.

2. One of the “Lessons Learned” from this investigation is that the board should retain a crisis communication firm for future needs.

So we’re planning on keeping this behavior up? You don’t need a crisis team if you stop creating crisis’.

The district already employees a large communication team. This “lesson learned” perpetuates the pattern of the BOE and district hiring consultants and instead of investing in and training their own.

3. I guess the kids ARE alright?

The investigators concluded that district issues were not negatively impacted student learning or quality of services.

4. I can buy that student continue to learn despite the chaos that has overtaken the executive level of the district. However, I will die on the hill that the quality of services for students could always be higher.

No. Evidence. Of. Improper. Conduct. By. The. Superintendent.

And yet, the Superintendent is no longer here and every investigating body in North Carolina is interested in the business conducted by the board.

A new chapter for Viking athletics begins. On Friday, October 2, North Mecklenburg High School celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new athletic football stadium — a project made possible by the 2023 bond.

The CMS Construction Department was proud to be there alongside Dr. Charlitta Hatch, member of the CMS Board of Education, Principal Stephanie Hood, Athletic Director Jennifer Baker, Ericia Turner, CMS Executive Director of Athletics, and our construction manager/general contractor, New Atlantic Contracting, Inc., honoring a facility built for our students and community. The students' excitement said it all—they couldn't wait to play under these new lights. Stay tuned: we'll be sharing the video with their interviews soon! Congratulations, North Meck! Here's to Friday nights under the lights, victories, milestones, and memories still to come. Go Vikings!

Today was one of those days where motherhood, community, and public service all ran together. I belive in #worklifeintegration so it makes my heart happy when my kids are with me.

I started by greeting North Charlotte residents at Councilwoman @reneepjohnson4clt town hall. Thank you for giving me space to connect with our neighbors.

Then we walked the @theboardwalkatuniversitycity #CLTKidsFest and ended our day enjoying A Year with Frog and Toad at @ctcharlottenc. 🐸🎭

Somewhere in the middle, my son asked me: “Mommy, are you worried that people won’t like you?”

I paused and was honest.

I told him, “Of course I worry sometimes. That’s natural. But I know who my real friends are. And I’m more worried about not doing what I believe is right because I’m afraid people won’t like me.”

You see every morning, our affirmations start with: “I can do hard things.” I always remind my kids: We don’t just say it. We do it.

That means they have to see me live it, too. I can’t teach them courage in the morning and avoid it when it gets uncomfortable.

So today we were with our community. We walked. We laughed. We watched Frog and Toad. We were together.

And somewhere along the way, I hope they saw what “I can do hard things” looks like.💜

It is about reaching out to your representatives before you need something. Showing up. Having conversations. Building bridges with people who may have different roles, backgrounds, or perspectives. And then, when the community needs a room like the one we had today, those relationships make the conversation possible.District 4 Community TownHall Charlotte

Today meant a lot to me.
Putting together a community Town Hall like this takes phone calls, emails, relationships, planning, and a whole lot of faith that people will actually show up on a Saturday morning — and they did.
I’m incredibly grateful to Council Member Reneé Johnson, Council Member Ed Driggs, Representative Nasif Majeed, and Douglas Welton for sitting in the room with our community, listening, answering questions, and helping us talk through real pathways forward. And a special thank you to Dr. Charlitta Hatch, who stopped in from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education just to spend time with us and speak to the community. She did not have to do that, and it meant something.

And what continues to impress me is how many leaders are willing to listen, learn, teach, explain, and come to the table.
I was honored to host today’s Town Hall with the District 4 Coalition, and I’m grateful to the Coalition for trusting me enough to take an idea and run with it. What started as a thought became a room full of residents, community leaders, elected officials, questions, ideas, concerns, and possibilities.

On a Saturday morning, when everyone in that room could have been doing a hundred other things, they chose to show up for their community.#CharlotteNC #Community #CivicEngagement #PublicService #CommunityLeadership

Regarding Nolan Wells, we were hopeful for a different outcome in his case. However, there are still unanswered questions and still no closure. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and friends.

In the broader conversation around Raising Black Boys in America, what questions do you have?

Ours consist of:

How can we have hard conversations together?

Why is silence still so piercing, and why are many reluctant to speak?

Why is the world like this?

What kinds of talks are you having with your children?

On this podcast episode of Raising Black Sons in America, we question the safety protocols and practices that should be in place to ensure our sons' well-being while in your care.

Is that fair?

“I don’t think the answer to sustaining demanding work is to become tougher and tougher. I think we have to become more intentional about how we carry the work—and how we make room to exhale along the way.

And maybe this is the question worth asking:

Where might you need a little more retreat in your life—not to walk away from the work, but to make room to reflect, reconsider, recover, and renew?”

@lucretiaberry @aurritalpayne @rachelwaltandco attending Exhale Social Justice + Self-Care Breatkfast Retreat, hosted by @ywcacentralcarolinas and presented by GFiber.

“That’s part of what the journaling component does in What LIES Between Us. It gives people somewhere to put what is coming up—to slow it down, name it, look at it, and begin working through it—without handing it to me or to someone else in the room.”

There’s a lot happening in @charmeckschools and around the @cmsboard right now. But in the midst of the adult distractions, teachers are still teaching, students are still learning, principals are still leading, and schools are still doing the work every single day. 💙

As we prepare for Tuesday’s Board meeting, there’s a lot on the agenda and I want to hear from you.

What questions should we be asking? What perspectives need to be heard? What do you want us to keep centered?

Drop your questions below or send me a message. My job is not just to have a seat at the table, but it’s to make sure the voices of the people we represent make it into the room.

Through all the noise, let’s keep the main thing the main thing: our children. 🎒📚
