Traditions like picking out our family #Christmas tree the day after #Thanksgiving is one of the reasons why I wrote Black Boy Joy Christmas Countdown. It’s important to share diverse stories so children can learn to celebrate differences and also find shared experiences with people who do not look like them. It’s equally important for Black children to see themselves in everyday stories and for non-Black children to see that as well. #representationmatters

Living through a global pandemic has taught me that the memories and traditions we have created in the past will live on in the midst of uncertainty.

Join #BlackBoyJoy as he counts down to Christmas with his parents. He will learn patience, the true meaning of Christmas, and have some fun along the way.

It finally feels like fall, y’all! 🍂🎃 Fall brings great weather and traditions that always have me looking back at our pictures from years past.

As the kids get older, I’m even more grateful for these little traditions that give us a reason to slow down, spend time together, and make more memories. 👦🏽 👧🏽

“Dr. @dsaunderswhite found me, and I didn’t even know I was lost.”

I spoke those words ten years ago at the funeral of my mentor, Dr. White. Today, they mean just as much.

#MEH3 and I traveled to @nccueagle to honor the 10th anniversary of her passing. Standing alongside @elizabethpaigeesq and @c3cilwhite, in front of the residence hall that now bears her name, I was overcome with emotion.

I remembered being on that campus for her installation. I remembered the young college student she took under her wing @_hamptonu. And I remembered the woman who saw something in me long before I fully understood what I was capable of.

Dr. White taught me how to lead, how to think bigger, how to navigate disappointment, how to bring others along, and how to say yes to opportunities I wasn’t quite ready to recognize.

Ten years ago, I stood at her funeral wondering how I could possibly find the words to honor her. Then I realized she had spent 14 years preparing me for that very moment. Today, standing on campus with my son, I realized she’s still teaching me and her lessons are woven into the way I lead, parent, teach, and serve.

I’m grateful that Mark got to be there today with her 2 children that I like to say I helped raise 🥹 He never had the chance to know her, but he is growing up with the lessons she gave me and today he got more of her through them.

Some people change your life. Others change the lives of people they’ll never meet because of the investment they made in you.

Dr. White did both and I hope I’m making her proud. #EaglePride #mentorship #Legacy by @charlittahatch

Today was one of those days where motherhood, community, and public service all ran together. I belive in #worklifeintegration so it makes my heart happy when my kids are with me.

I started by greeting North Charlotte residents at Councilwoman @reneepjohnson4clt town hall. Thank you for giving me space to connect with our neighbors.

Then we walked the @theboardwalkatuniversitycity #CLTKidsFest and ended our day enjoying A Year with Frog and Toad at @ctcharlottenc. 🐸🎭

Somewhere in the middle, my son asked me: “Mommy, are you worried that people won’t like you?”

I paused and was honest.

I told him, “Of course I worry sometimes. That’s natural. But I know who my real friends are. And I’m more worried about not doing what I believe is right because I’m afraid people won’t like me.”

You see every morning, our affirmations start with: “I can do hard things.” I always remind my kids: We don’t just say it. We do it.

That means they have to see me live it, too. I can’t teach them courage in the morning and avoid it when it gets uncomfortable.

So today we were with our community. We walked. We laughed. We watched Frog and Toad. We were together.

And somewhere along the way, I hope they saw what “I can do hard things” looks like.💜

There’s a lot happening in @charmeckschools and around the @cmsboard right now. But in the midst of the adult distractions, teachers are still teaching, students are still learning, principals are still leading, and schools are still doing the work every single day. 💙

As we prepare for Tuesday’s Board meeting, there’s a lot on the agenda and I want to hear from you.

What questions should we be asking? What perspectives need to be heard? What do you want us to keep centered?

Drop your questions below or send me a message. My job is not just to have a seat at the table, but it’s to make sure the voices of the people we represent make it into the room.

Through all the noise, let’s keep the main thing the main thing: our children. 🎒📚

Parents, here's your permission slip: Reading doesn't have to look perfect. 📚❤️

You don't need an hour.

You don't need the perfect bedtime routine.

You don't even have to be sitting still.

Read in the car.
Read while dinner is cooking.
Read during bath time.
Read while waiting at practice.

The magic isn't in where you read.

It's in making reading part of everyday life.

Those little moments add up to stronger readers, richer conversations, and memories your children will carry long after they outgrow storybooks.

🎧 Tune in to the full episode of The Community Classroom with Antuan Hawkins for simple, practical ways to build a love of reading with no perfect schedule required. #linkinbio

Apparently my 5-year-old knows more about spa days than I do. 😂

#SmileyGirl announced that she wanted a spa day, and I quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing. I’ve never even created an at-home spa night for myself!

So we headed to @sephora and told them we were planning a mommy-and-me spa night, and they helped us pick out masks for both of us.

I thought I had it from there.

I did not. 😂

I turned on some music and Amelia immediately informed me that spa music is NOT “party music with words.” Then she explained that we were supposed to be quiet, rest, and relax.

Yes, ma’am. 😂

And somewhere between the face masks, the correct music, and being instructed by a 5-year-old to stop talking, I realized this was about more than playing spa. This was time for us to slow down together and just be.

I love that she knows how to advocate for what she needs and she’s starting to create her own self-care routine on her own.

10/10 experience. Apparently I will be taking all future spa instructions from Amelia. 💕

Now I need recommendations: What should we add to our next mommy-and-me spa night?

What does it mean to raise Black sons in America?

In this podcast episode, we trace the pattern from Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, George Floyd, and now Nolan Wells. We also have a candid conversation about "the talk," keeping Black children safe, and what allies need to understand.

Our hope is that you will tune in, share the episode, and let us know what you think.

When 18-year-old Nolan Wells went missing on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi this summer, the question that opened this conversation emerged from Black maternal grief: Why must Black mothers display their grief for answers to come? We talk with Dr. Tehia Glass and Dr. Erin Miller, both educators at UNC Charlotte, about what it means to raise Black sons when their safety is never a guarantee. They trace the pattern from Emmett Till through Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, George Floyd, and now Nolan Wells. They ask harder questions about the talks mothers have to have, the spaces where Black children aren't safe, and what white mothers and allies actually need to understand. More than grief, the conversation explores curiosity as a tool: how curiosity can shift understanding, how centering Black mothers' voices reshapes education policy, and how storytelling creates the generational change that mothers alone shouldn't have to carry.

“Mommy, I’m the luckiest girl in the world because I got to be the only big girl at your meetings.” 🥹💕

Meanwhile, I was feeling guilty.

Yesterday, motherhood and service collided. We went from basketball practice to the @rhopsiomega Connection & Social Action Retreat, where I shared @charmeckschools updates, to listening to community voices @publicschoolstrong @creed_nc session with basketball, lunch, the library, shopping and plenty of snacks in between.

I kept wondering if I was giving her enough of me.

She thought she was getting the best of me.

Whew. 😭

Sometimes what feels like mom guilt to us feels like a front-row seat to them.

Maybe our children don’t always need us to perfectly separate our worlds. Maybe there’s something beautiful about letting them see the whole thing.

I thought she was tagging along with me.
Turns out, she thought she had the best seat in the house.
