POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Regarding Nolan Wells, we were hopeful for a different outcome in his case. However, there are still unanswered questions and still no closure. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and friends.

In the broader conversation around Raising Black Boys in America, what questions do you have?

Ours consist of:

How can we have hard conversations together?

Why is silence still so piercing, and why are many reluctant to speak?

Why is the world like this?

What kinds of talks are you having with your children?

Is that fair?

What does it mean to raise Black sons in America?

In this podcast episode, we trace the pattern from Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, George Floyd, and now Nolan Wells. We also have a candid conversation about "the talk," keeping Black children safe, and what allies need to understand.

Our hope is that you will tune in, share the episode, and let us know what you think.

When 18-year-old Nolan Wells went missing on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi this summer, the question that opened this conversation emerged from Black maternal grief: Why must Black mothers display their grief for answers to come? We talk with Dr. Tehia Glass and Dr. Erin Miller, both educators at UNC Charlotte, about what it means to raise Black sons when their safety is never a guarantee. They trace the pattern from Emmett Till through Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, George Floyd, and now Nolan Wells. They ask harder questions about the talks mothers have to have, the spaces where Black children aren't safe, and what white mothers and allies actually need to understand. More than grief, the conversation explores curiosity as a tool: how curiosity can shift understanding, how centering Black mothers' voices reshapes education policy, and how storytelling creates the generational change that mothers alone shouldn't have to carry.

The Mothers' Roundtable has spoken, and we love the lessons and gems that have been passed down to us:

🙏 Pray first and leave room for God’s timing. Motherhood calls for patience, especially when children grow up and begin making decisions for themselves.

🌟 Keep the conversations going. Calls, kitchen-table talks, honest check-ins, and quick apologies help families stay close through change.

💖 Love each person for who they are. Children, spouses, in-laws, and grandchildren need different kinds of care, and strong families make room for those differences.

What are some lessons that were passed down to you? Please share in the comments below.

One of the greatest gifts my parents gave me wasn't perfection.

It was watching them apologize.

Growing up, my parents didn't pretend they always got it right. When they made a mistake, they owned it. They apologized. And then they modeled something just as important: reconciliation.

That shaped how I parent.

It shaped my marriage.

It taught me that saying "I'm sorry" doesn't make you weak and that it makes your relationships stronger.

We also learned something else...

Just because someone hurts you doesn't mean they stop hurting too.

Families aren't built by avoiding conflict. They're built by learning how to repair it.

Because one day, the little people watching us today will be leading families of their own tomorrow.

🎙️ Tune in to this heartfelt episode of @behindthethrone04 with our moms as we unpack the lessons, values, and wisdom that shaped the women we are today. Watch, listen, and join the conversation. #linkinbio

💬 What did your parents model that you still carry into your own family?

The women who raised us take their seats at the table for a candid, tender, and funny conversation about the lessons that stayed with them. Betty Hope (Helen's mom) and Michele Crowder (Charlitta's mom) look back on sleepless nights, matching hair ribbons, Saturday morning talks, and the everyday choices that shaped their families. The conversation moves from raising children to loving us as adults, making room for grandchildren, and learning when to speak, listen, help, or step back. Through family stories and plenty of laughter, the four women share the faith, honesty, and care behind the mothers we have become.

Betty Hope, affectionately known as “Mama Hope,” is a pastor’s wife, retired educator, mother, grandmother, and trusted source of wisdom whose life reflects faith, service, and family values.

Michele Crowder, lovingly known as “Honey Mimi,” is a wife, mother, and grandmother whose faith-rooted, gentle approach to parenting continues to influence the way Charlitta raises her own children.

3 Lessons our Mothers Passed Down:

🙏 Pray first and leave room for God’s timing. Motherhood calls for patience, especially when children grow up and begin making decisions for themselves.

🌟 Keep the conversation going. Calls, kitchen-table talks, honest check-ins, and quick apologies help families stay close through change.

💖 Love each person for who they are. Children, spouses, in-laws, and grandchildren need different kinds of care, and strong families make room for those differences.

What is a sabbatical, really?

It's defined as an intentional pause from your normal responsibilities to rest, reflect, and realign. It can look like a few months or weeks off from work, a creative pause, a retreat to heal and rest, or mini-breaks over a weekend.

In this podcast episode, Ashley Varnado talks about stepping away from her corporate career to embrace her "radical sabbatical." It's also a moment where she hopes to help others rethink success, ambition, and rest.

For many, taking a sabbatical can sound like a foreign concept. After tuning in, we hope that you, too, will see it differently and find a way to make it work for you.
