March is the Month of Photography in Denver! 📸The Center of the American West’s exhibit “Charerría: exploring the human-horse relationship in Mexican Rodeo” is participating in this “biennial festival that celebrates the art of photography through exhibitions and events across the region” (https://denvermop.org).

To kick off this Month of Photography, enjoy this teaser of the reel we put together from last fall 2024 when we brought the exhibit alive by welcoming the horses and riders from the exhibit.

Yesterday was beyond words and this is only the beginning of photos and video captured throughout the two hours we hosted the horses, charros and charras from the exhibit “Charrería: exploring the human horse connection in Mexican Rodeo.”

They might have come as part of the 2024 Culture Crawl sponsored by the @cublibraries and it might have coincided with #hispanicheritagemonth but what happened on September 25th, 2024 was history made. How so? It is through the important questions we ask, like when was the last time horses were on the @cuboulder campus, and when was the last time a charro swung his rope on these lands (if ever)? We truly felt the presence of something greater on this day, and we are still grappling to find the words. Just know hearts are full, full, full.

So now, please enjoy some photos of beautiful horses and riders in action - and we will story even more too!

There are so many people to thank and we will tag them as much as possible, but there are those who cannot be tagged and those are the horses / caballos. They were the epitome of safe and glamorous, agreeable and personable, and we are so lucky to have had them for this ride of history - today, yesterday, and for all of the tomorrows to come. 🐴

🇲🇽 🐴 🇺🇸Do you love horses and horse culture? Are you interested in Mexican and Mexican-American history and culture? Then come join the Center of the American West during CU Boulder’s Culture Crawl for “Charrería on Parade” where we bring our photography exhibit about the national sport of Mexico alive in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

From 10am – 12pm on Wednesday, September 25th you’ll find us out from Macky Auditorium and along Pleasant Street with the horses and riders featured in the exhibit “Charrería: Exploring the Human-Horse Connection in Mexican Rodeo.” Meet gentle, beautiful horses from a variety of sport and performance breeds here in Colorado and learn more about them from their riders dressed in official charro and charra uniforms. Riders will also be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

And this is just one event of MANY happening on the CU Boulder campus tomorrow for the 4th annual Culture Crawl, so we will have maps and more information about additional events on hand for visitors as well. 🦬 The more events you attend, the more opportunities to grab a t-shirt, swag, and swipe your BuffOne card to enter into a raffle. CU there?!

Big congratulations to Naiomy Torres and Escaramuza Charra Flor De Aguileña for taking first place at the Colorado State Competition this year. They’ll be competing in Mexico this fall!

This image of the team is one of the images on view in my exhibition”‘Charrería: Exploring The Human-Horse Relationship in Mexican Rodeo” at The Center Of The American West in Boulder through December 2024.

Note: The exhibition space is closed for the month of July but there is now an Online Digital Visitor’s Guide viewable at the Center’s website ( link in bio ). This interpretive guide includes images from the show and comprehensive insight into the unique Mexican sport, lifestyle and tradition that I’ve been documenting for over a decade.

Thanks as always to the Torres family for their support and to program director Tamar McKee @tamarvsmckee for bringing this project to life and making the show available to everyone in Colorado and beyond.

Fine art prints are available for purchase. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thank you for your support!

And big congrats to Naiomy and the team for first place!

The arena at a charreada is called a Lienzo. The English translation for lienzo is Canvas. The fun and inspiring part of this project for me is to show up not knowing what’s to come and use the Blank Canvas of the Lienzo as an opportunity to explore and experience that magical force called creativity. I watch the changing light, hope for unexpected moments and search for new ways of seeing. So much gratitude for these explorations.

Happy birthday Victor! @victor_gurrola05

This semester, students from our “Introduction to the American West” class welcomed 📸 photographer Chris Sessions and 👑 La Reina Del Estado De Colorado / the Escaramuza Queen for the state of Colorado Carolina Herrera to answer students’ questions and share their insights on the current exhibit “Charrería: Exploring the Human-Horse Relationship in Mexican Rodeo.” It was a wonderfully collaborative day, and stay tuned for a special co-creation coming from it!

Chris and Carolina’s visit was also featured in CU Boulder’s College of Arts & Sciences Magazine in the article “Lassoing light and capturing the magic between horse and rider.” You can read it by going to the Center of the American West’s website 👉Link in Bio

The exhibit is open Mondays - Thursday from 10am - 4pm at the Center of the American West on the CU Boulder campus. Call, email, or DM for more information🐴
