This is an unseen clip from our shoot with @blacktiph where I boatside a ~250 lb Goliath grouper using the Monsta 68/30 from @cbone_official.

When you fish properly with the right amount of drag (35 kg in this case), you have technically no chance of damaging your gear. After the video came out, a lot of people asked me what happened. I told them that with a locked drag, you can break just anything and that’s exactly what happened. We ended up breaking both the rod and the reel.

Learning as an angler is a constant process. You make mistakes, but that’s how you learn and become better. Don’t be afraid to make them, and don’t be afraid to admit when you were wrong.

🇫🇷Voici une séquence inédite de notre tournage avec @blacktiph où je mets au bateau un mérou Goliath d’environ 250 lb avec la Monsta 68/30 de @cbone_official.

Quand on pêche correctement, avec le bon frein (35 kg dans ce cas), il n’y a pratiquement aucune chance techniquement d’abîmer son matériel. Beaucoup de personnes sont venues me demander ce qu’il s’était passé après la sortie de la vidéo. Je leur ai expliqué qu’avec un frein littéralement bloqué, on peut casser n’importe quel matériel… et c’est exactement ce qui est arrivé.

L’apprentissage est permanent dans la vie d’un pêcheur. On fait des erreurs, mais c’est comme ça qu’on progresse et qu’on devient meilleur. Il ne faut pas avoir peur de les faire, ni d’admettre lorsqu’on a eu tort.

A couple of weeks ago, I jumped on a call with Josh, and he invited me to take on this seemingly impossible challenge: catching a Goliath Grouper on spinning🫠

And I have to say, it was quite an humbling experience. I was using the kind of tackle I normally use for giant bluefin tuna, but here, everything happens differently. The power of these fish comes instantly. The fight doesn’t last long, but you have to stop a real tractor in just a few seconds. It’s completely different from anything I’ve experienced in my life as an angler.

The tackle was definitely not adapted, and I realized that pretty quickly. So now there’s only one thing left to do: get back to work and develop something strong enough to take on this challenge.

Il y a quelques semaines, j’ai eu Josh au téléphone et il m’a lancé un défi qui semblait presque impossible : capturer un mérou Goliath en spinning🫠

Et je dois dire que ça a été une leçon d’humilité. J’ai utilisé le matériel que j’emploie habituellement pour les gros thons rouges, mais ici, tout se passe différemment. La puissance de ces poissons est instantanée. Le combat ne dure pas longtemps, mais il faut arrêter un véritable tracteur en seulement quelques secondes. C’est complètement différent de tout ce que j’avais connu jusqu’à présent dans ma vie de pêcheur.

Le matériel n’était clairement pas adapté, et je m’en suis rendu compte très rapidement. Maintenant, il ne reste plus qu’une chose à faire : se remettre au travail et développer un équipement suffisamment solide pour relever ce défi.
