✨WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY✨ and some of my favorite books with mental health representation. 🧠❤️

World Mental Health Day is observed every October 10th to raise awareness about mental health and encourage open, compassionate conversations. It’s a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health and that everyone deserves access to support and care.

We can (and should!) use today as an opportunity to check in with ourselves and others, challenge the stigma against mental health conversations, and remember that caring for our mental health is an ongoing process.

Talking about our mental health is how we save lives. This is incredibly important to me as someone who has struggled with mental health my entire life. I grew up in a home with an incredibly sick mother. But my sisters and I were told it was all in her head and a moral failing. So when I started showing symptoms in my late teens? I already felt like a failure.

After many, many years of diagnosis, I’m finally receiving the right treatment for me and my c-ptsd, anxiety, and adhd. For 10 years I went through life with a borderline personality disorder diagnosis, and the stigma around BPD really made it difficult for me to get the care that I needed.

Vilifying mental illness (and therefore those who suffer from it) has cost so many lives. Speak up. Check on your loved ones. And end the stigma against mental illness and mental health awareness.

The WNDB Mentorship Program aims to support marginalized writers and illustrators by pairing them with an experienced professional in the field. Our mentors work one-on-one with their mentees over the course of an entire calendar year, offering advice to improve craft and better understand the inner workings of the publishing industry.

For the 2027 mentorship cycle, WNDB is offering seventeen mentorships split amongst the following categories: Picture Book (PB), Middle Grade (MG), Young Adult (YA), and Illustration (IL). The upcoming mentorship cycle will run from January 2027 through December 2027.
