SPINAL EXTENSION

Every @chromaticyoga class has an emphasis on a particular part of the body which we focus on through out the entire class - usually culminating in a peak pose.

In today’s class we worked with the focus of SPINAL EXTENSION (aka backbend) through a variety of poses using the verbal cueing of “move the low ribs forward and to to create spinal extension”

I was amazed to see the students refining their articulation and accessing deeper backbends than I’ve ever seen them do before! This is the power of chromatic yoga : a step by step process that puts the student in the driver seat of their own body to intelligently and intentionally create the joint alignment and muscle engagement the different poses ask of us.

Toward the end of the class we also discussed how finding facility in these parts of our bodies, for example, spinal extension, not only create functionality for example, but also facilitate expression! The joy and expansion to one feels in a beautiful backbend is so sweet and incomparable to anything else.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Here’s a piece of my morning practice. Here’s the reality…most days I don’t have more than 45 minutes to practice. I don’t do the same sequence each time. I’m definitely not always feeling strong. Some days it feels like I’ve never done this practice before. Some days I start strong and after 15 minutes, I resort to a seated practice. Some days I’m just working on strength poses for 20 minutes straight just jumping around through the “hard stuff”

What I’m trying to do is keep it real. genuine. I’m not perfect. Many days I’d like to skip practice. I wish I was sleeping in until 7 AM…..But every time I practice, I feel better. The world feels a bit more manageable. I feel more in my body. I feel more centered. I feel more like the real me. And that’s why I’ll keep advocating for this practice. That’s why I remind students that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Doesn’t have to look the same each day. You don’t have to put your leg behind your head. All you have to do is show up. And really, for many of us, that’s the hardest thing. So let’s just start there.
