// কন্যাদায়ের শেষে //

OBSERVATIONS 001—010 · THE FIRST TEN

Ten photographs began in ten different places.

A gesture. A glance. A passing figure. A moment of play. Something in the light. Something small enough to have gone unnoticed.

We asked each photographer the same question:

What did you notice that made you make this photograph?

Placed together, their answers remind us that photographs may share a page, but the reasons for making them rarely begin in the same place.

These are the first ten Observations.

To the ten photographers who stopped, noticed, made a photograph, and then trusted us with the story of that moment — thank you.

You gave Observations its beginning.

#theunposedjournal Editorial page from The Unposed Journal bringing together Observations 001–010. Ten photographs in colour and black and white are arranged across an off-white page alongside short excerpts from each photographer describing what they noticed before making the photograph. The images include everyday street scenes, children, animals, a lone tree, a bookshop and passing moments of human activity. Large text near the lower centre asks, “WHAT DID YOU NOTICE?” The page is titled “Observations 001–010 — The First Ten” and includes the names of all ten photographers.

OBSERVATIONS 001—005

Five Ways of Noticing

Five photographs. Five photographers. The same question.

What did you notice that made you make this photograph?

Observation began as a way of staying with a single photograph a little longer.

After five, we wanted to bring them together — not because these photographs belong to the same story, but because each began with a different act of noticing.

And we’ll keep doing this.

Every five Observations, we’ll pause and bring the photographs together — to see what they might reveal when placed beside one another.

Thank you to the first five photographers who trusted us with a photograph and shared what made them stop.

Placed together, these five left us with one thought:

Five moments when ordinary things briefly fell into place.

The question remains the same.

The answer never does. Editorial collage from The Unposed Journal titled “Observations 001—005: Five Ways of Noticing.” Five street photographs are arranged in a grid: children and pedestrians within a layered market scene; a black-and-white street scene with an ice-cream cart passing beneath large advertisements; a close-up goat with two boys in the background; a dog standing against a vivid red building in strong light and shadow; and a busy flower market seen from above. Below the photographs is the recurring Observation question, “What did you notice that made you make this photograph?” followed by: “The question remains the same. The answer never does.” An italic editorial line reads, “Five moments when ordinary things briefly fell into place.”

OBSERVATION 005

A crowded market, a maze of movement, and an order that only begins to appear when we stay a little longer.

For Observation 005, photographer Dipanjan Banerjee shares what drew him to this colourful chaos — and we stay with the frame a little longer to notice the rhythm moving through it.

People move through a central pathway surrounded by vendors and piles of vivid orange produce, with blue tarpaulins and clothing adding contrasting colour throughout the densely layered scene. Below the photograph are Dipanjan’s contributor portrait, credit and his words: “The Colourful Chaos!”
