Yesterday, we had the opportunity to spend the morning cooking and learning with seniors at Forest Park Branch Library in Cincinnati.

In recognition of Healthy Aging Month, we talked about nutrition, healthier food choices, and simple ways to prepare balanced meals that can support their health as they age.

At Afromeals Foundation, we believe food and nutrition education matters at every stage of life. We are grateful to everyone who joined us and made the morning such a wonderful experience.

Cooking is about so much more than what ends up on the plate. It’s about learning, staying engaged, making healthier choices, and sharing something with the people around us, and all those things matter at every age.

Here’s to good food, good habits, and staying connected through cooking.

There’s a lot happening between now and the end of the year, and we don’t want to do it without you.

We have a full few months ahead of us, with programs happening across Cincinnati and Dayton, and plenty of opportunities to get involved along the way.

Some of these programs need helping hands before the first participant even walks through the door. Ingredients need to be prepped. Stations need to be ready and once the cooking starts, an extra pair of hands can make all the difference.

That’s where YOU as a volunteer comes in. You don’t have to know your way around a professional kitchen. You just have to be willing to show up, help, and be part of the experience.

Have you been thinking about joining us for the first time, there’s a place for you in what’s coming.

Can cooking be a form of preventive health? We think it can be part of it.

Preventive health is often associated with doctor visits, screenings, and checkups.

Those things matter, but some of the choices that support our health over time also happen much closer to home, including in the kitchen.

Knowing how to cook gives people more control over what goes into their meals. It creates opportunities to add more vegetables, build a balanced plate, understand ingredients, and prepare nutritious meals in ways that still reflect the foods and flavors they know and love.

But those skills aren't something everyone has had the opportunity to learn.

That's one reason Afromeals Foundation doesn't focus on food access alone. Through our hands-on cooking and nutrition programs, we help children and families build practical skills they can use beyond a single class or meal.

Because helping communities eat well isn't only about what food is available.

It's also about giving people the knowledge and confidence to turn that food into meals that support their health.

What’s one cooking skill that has helped you make healthier choices at home?

A bag of groceries can help feed a household. But what happens after the groceries make it home?

Having access to food is essential, especially for households experiencing food insecurity. But access is only one part of the picture.

Knowing how to turn available ingredients into meals, understanding how to build a balanced plate, and feeling confident enough to cook with what you have can make that access go further.

That’s why food and nutrition education matters alongside food access.

It gives people practical knowledge they can use again and again, whether that means learning how to prepare an unfamiliar ingredient, making nutritious choices with what is available, or simply becoming more confident in the kitchen.

Access can put food in someone’s hands. Knowledge can help them know what to do with it. Both have a place in building stronger food security.

What does food security mean to you? Tell us in the comments. 👇🏾

What could make a child say, “No more Wendy’s”?

For one of our campers, it came after the first day of learning about food and nutrition, and actually putting those lessons on a plate.

At our Cincinnati Summer Food & Nutrition Cooking Camp, the children learned what different foods do for their bodies, how to build a balanced meal, and how to prepare nutritious food themselves.

Then they cooked. They tasted. They ate the meals they had made.

And one participant’s response was simply:

“No more Wendy’s again"

That response meant something to us. She had experienced another way of eating, not because someone told her fast food was “bad,” but because she had learned how to prepare a balanced meal and discovered that nutritious food could be something she enjoyed too.

That’s why we believe children need more than information about healthy eating. Give them the knowledge. Put the ingredients in their hands. Let them cook. Let them taste.

You might be surprised by what they discover for themselves.

What food or cooking skill do you wish you had learned as a child? Tell us in the comments. 👇🏾

Behind the scenes of when Chef Gabi @chefgabio shared her immigrant story and also prepared a curated vegan experience at Mazu @mazu.eats while she participated in Immigrants Feed America.

The vegan meal consisted of Smoky Jollof rice, puff puff, Akara, plantains and Ghanian stewed spinach.

The dinner was an opportunity to share the richness of West African cuisine while highlighting the contributions immigrants make to America's food culture.

Thank you to the BIPOC Food & Farming Network @bffn_ohio for making this event possible.

Some of the most important lessons children learn don't always happen behind a desk.

In the kitchen, children get to use their hands, ask questions, make mistakes and try again. They learn how to follow instructions, work with others, understand the food they're eating and experience the pride that comes from preparing something themselves.

These experiences matter because cooking is a skill they can carry into adulthood. Giving children the opportunity to learn early can help build confidence, independence and a healthier relationship with food as they grow.

That is why children and young people are such an important part of the communities we serve. We're not simply teaching them how to make a meal. We are giving them practical skills they can keep using long after the class is over.

Share this with someone who believes every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to cook.

Confidence changes eating habits by turning good intentions into everyday actions.

Many people want to eat healthier, but wanting to and knowing where to begin are two different things. When cooking feels unfamiliar or intimidating, it's often easier to choose what's quick, convenient, and familiar instead.

That's why building confidence in the kitchen matters. Learning simple cooking skills gives people the ability to prepare meals for themselves, try new ingredients, and make healthier choices with confidence instead of uncertainty.

One successful meal leads to another. Over time, what once felt overwhelming becomes part of everyday life.

Sometimes, healthier eating doesn't begin with a new diet. It begins with the confidence to cook.

Share this with someone who's learning to feel more confident in the kitchen.

Cooking is a skill, one that is learned over time through guidance, practice, and experience. Yet many people are expected to prepare nutritious meals without ever being taught how.

When cooking feels unfamiliar, healthy eating can seem complicated, expensive, or simply out of reach. It's not because people don't care about their health. Often, they just haven't had the opportunity to learn the skills that make healthy eating practical.

That's why we focus on education before expectation.

Through hands-on cooking classes, nutrition education, and culturally relevant recipes, we help people discover that healthy meals don't have to be intimidating. They can be affordable, enjoyable, and realistic for everyday life.

Making healthy eating achievable isn't about asking people to change everything overnight. It's about giving them the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to make one healthier choice today, and another tomorrow.

Because when people learn how to cook, they gain more than a recipe. They gain a skill that can nourish themselves and their families for a lifetime.

Follow @afromeals.foundation as we continue sharing practical cooking and nutrition education that empowers healthier communities.

On July 11th, 2026, the Kitchen became more than a place to cook, it became a place where culture, community, and collaboration came together.

In partnership with Miami Valley Meals, we prepared Palm Nut Chicken Stew, known in the Congolese community as Chicken Moambe, for members of Dayton's Congolese community. For many families, this wasn't just a meal. It was a familiar taste that brought comfort and a connection to home.

As the meals were being prepared, we had the honor of welcoming members of the New African Commission in Dayton. They toured the Miami Valley Meals facility to learn more about our partnership and see firsthand how culturally relevant meals can help address food insecurity while honoring the traditions and cultures of the people we serve.

What followed was more than a tour. It was a meaningful conversation about the importance of ensuring African communities have access to food that reflects their culture and about how partnerships like these can continue to strengthen our community.

We are grateful to the New African Commission for taking the time to learn about this work and to Miami Valley Meals for being an incredible partner in serving our community. Together, we are proving that when organizations come together with a shared purpose, the impact reaches far beyond the kitchen.

❤️ Because everyone deserves a meal that feels like home.
