How to have a successful art opening:

1️⃣ Spend 15 years building community 🫶
2️⃣ Crash out on IG in the days leading up to your show (for the algorithm) 🥴

Immense thanks to everyone who came out to support the opening of Play Well @niagaraartistscentre, and to those who have already purchased pieces 🤯 This series was ambitious and I’m incredibly proud of the work.

Play Well is on display until July 12. Stop in at NAC Wednesday–Saturday 12–5pm or often by chance. Don’t miss @clelia_masks in the Plate Glass Gallery and @jordynstewart in the Show Room Gallery.

Our outdoor space, so far.🤓 How fun to get to start with (essentially) a blank slate. It really worked out for the best to end up with a fire pit ready, beachy, pea gravel patio. What a beautiful evening to have an inaugural al fresco dinner.🌴☀️🪵 #wip #outdooroasis #manquilahome #smallspaces #patiodesign #terracedesign #backyarddesign #happysummer #seabream #pampano #permanentceasefirenow

After receiving several absurdly expensive quotes to build a stairs + small deck and fire pit area (we wanted a deck low to the ground and no railings), we’ve decided to keep the existing builder stairs and do a sweet, simple pea gravel terrace instead. Terraces are more low key, less expensive and less cookie cutter. They tend to be more popular in Europe. That’s my take anyway. We are not DIY people so this will be done properly by a professional complete with drains to avoid any flooding from rain and overflow from our neighbours’ damp backyard.

In honour of Father’s Day, I made this moodboard and a (somewhat-to-scale) plan. @chefrudyboquila has been waiting almost a year to light up our fire pit!

A picnic table will minimize chair movement on the pea gravel. Not pictured: our freestanding hammock, outdoor lights and maybe a sail shade. Rudy hates Muskoka/Adirondack chairs. He isn’t interested in reclining, esp when cooking over a fire. So we will figure out fire pit seating alternatives with smaller footprints if our cute Ikea stools don’t work. Can’t wait to enjoy the backyard this summer and beyond 🤓🌾🪵 #manquilahome #terracedesign #winecountrytownhome #peagravelpatio #niagaraonthelake #happyfathersday

A rare uncluttered kitchen.😆We finished what the builder started with the backsplash after finding 1.5 boxes of tile in the basement. Instead of starting over and ripping out the tile trim, we just had our tile guys patch in the rest. Yes, it was intentional. The Chef really wanted this done. I did too. A small change but a very satisfying one. (Slide 2 is the before, including the incorrect island countertop which the builder has already fixed). 🤓 #manquilahome #winecountrytownhome #backsplash #smallchange #freetiles #kitchendesign #niagaraonthelake
