Highbridge Voices 2026 Benefit Concert | This past summer I was an Associate Conductor and Accompanist for my third concert series with Highbridge Voices. The students across several different schools in the South Bronx urged us as educators to instill the rigor and values of what music can be. My mission as an educator has always been to break down the historical barriers that keep so many students out of the arts, and to imbue them the courage to stand up and sing. I’m grateful for the lessons I learned as part of Highbridge Voices, and for @chellzblue23 and @ms.c.scott who dove headfirst alongside me into this last year to create a truly remarkable season. These students are the future of the arts, and I’m thankful to have been with them on their journey.

Honest moment: I cried at least three times last Saturday (twice on stage) all tears of joy. 🥹
I’m a firm believer that music heals, and being surrounded by this much love, family, friendship, and world-class artistry has left my heart overflowing.

So grateful for my beautiful Porgy family, my warriors @uiatalent , and to my loved ones who showed up and held me through it all. This chapter may be ending, but my novel is far from over.

Also, a special bow of gratitude and admiration to the incomparable @gravesmontgomery 👑 Sharing the stage during your final curtain has been an honor beyond words. Your artistry, integrity, and legacy continue to inspire generations including myself, and WE are ALL grateful. 🤍

It takes a village to raise a child but when that child retains the lessons learned, they must find other villages that resonate with their assignment so they can continue the cycle and that’s how I feel about the collective of Black/POC classical/opera singers; especially in the Tri State! Other singers have been added along the way but I’ve been blessed to sing with the same people professionally since I was 16 years old; the baby in every assembly (until a new generation started entering the fold). I often wondered why I was able to be in rooms like THIS and with singers who very much could be a FORCE on their own platforms. God allowed it to not only show me that my gift belongs in these rooms but the lesson of working together with gifts of the same level or greater to complete the assignment at hand!

This was my only “Messiah” of the season and quite frankly, this is the only messiah I had to do! “How can 16 singers sound like a mass choir?!” “How much time did yall prepare?!”…it’s simple. COOPERATION requires EGO SUPPRESSION; especially if it’s not a show of your own. You can sing? You can play? Sure but can you stick to the parameters of the position you’re playing on that team to get to the bag?! Choirs definitely teach you how to sing with others but curated ensembles teach you how to champion your peers (especially when they get their time to let their gifts shine) as well as gauge how much of your gift is needed to bring the conductor’s vision for the sound to life! I’m thankful for the many examples of how your character carries you further than any note you could ever hold. Thank you @courtneybaritone222 and @cstarsoftomorrow for including me in such an ensemble…always happy to be one in the number! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

I was so happy to be invited as a guest soloist and speaker at the Highbridge Voices benefit gala this past month.

Sometimes, we’re unaware of how much we inspire others until we see it for ourselves. 🎯

It was a beautiful event, and I was the one who left feeling inspired! Michelle Trinidad @chellzblue23 is a powerhouse! Conductor, director, and example for her students. And the kids are beyond amazing… Thank you, Michelle, for the invitation, and also thank you, Richard Owen, Director of Highbridge Voices. 🙏🏼

It was also great to see and be accompanied by Antonio Del Valle @santorican25 !! 🎹
I’ll share a snapshot of my speech if you’re interested in reading it:

‘I was born and raised in Brazil, where music is everywhere: on the streets, churches, in my own home. I remember being a little boy listening from classical music, to gospel, jazz, chorinho echoing through my dad’s room, dreaming that maybe one day, I could be someone producing that high quality sound. But dreams like that, especially for Black and brown kids in places like where I grew up, often feel just out of reach. I felt out of reach many times, when I wasn’t able to pay for music lessons and go to concerts.

But I persisted.

I had access to a music program at the church my parents grew up, and this program saw me… they saw who I could become. That program gave me my first flute, my first ensemble experience, and eventually, it gave me the opportunity to dream of a great future for myself. That support carried me all the way to becoming principal flute of the Brazilian Marine Symphony Orchestra, winning National and international competitions, and later, after moving to the United States, working with world-class artists, performing at venues such as Carnegie hall, and with orchestras such as the Seattle Symphony and other orchestras across the US.

Talent is not enough. Access is everything.‘
