This story about halation is a glimpse into the much larger world behind the camera.

We have the privilege of working with engineers, scientists, artists, creators, designers, and image quality guardians who care deeply about making tools for people who love photography.

That means studying the history of photographic materials, the strange behaviors of light and perception, and the qualities of cameras people have loved — or loved to hate — for generations.

So when visionary director @alexprager said on set, “The neon doesn’t look right,” we recognized it immediately. Of course. We had been thinking about that too. Immediate mind meld!

Halation is one small detail. Behind it are huge teams noticing, testing, and caring about things most people will never know because it just works now. I’m so grateful to be part of it. Congratulations on What Holds Us curated by @kathyryan with our fearless leader @scottseviour and biggest thank you @alexprager for pushing us even farther with your art and mind’s eye. Photographers often shoot for a year or more to build a show. Jimmy Chin (@jimmychin) had 36 hours.

The photographer and filmmaker flew into the Bugaboos in British Columbia with Conrad Anker, his climbing partner of 25 years, and shot everything on an iPhone 18 Pro. Kathy Ryan (@kathyryan) and Pamela Chen (@chenpamela) of Apple (@apple) set the brief together, and Kathy edited the pictures into “What Holds Us,” which opened in New York on September 18. “I like that sort of pressure. It makes me very decisive,” Jimmy says.

***KATHY RYAN APPRECIATION POST*** Kathy Ryan, my enduring inspiration, is the visionary curator of What Holds Us — an ambitious photography exhibition by @alexprager @jackdavisonphoto @jimmychin. She brings together these three iconic artists from their far-flung worlds, and created space for each to go further and become even more fully themselves.

Dear Kathy, it has been one of the great honors of my life to support your vision as aesthetics scientist — to learn from the way you see, and to mind meld so deeply with you and the artists through the work we made together.

Thank you @kathyryan for helping us see what could be.

What Holds Us.

It’s been a while since I got to just make photographs. Thank you @kathyryan and @chenpamela for the idea and the freedom to run with it. What ensued was a wild 36-hour strike mission into the mountains to photograph the show.

Over my life I have returned to the mountains again and again. It’s there where I’ve learned to focus on the fundamentals. I come here to think about what matters, what holds us. In these raw, wild places there is no place to hide from yourself. I have experienced awe, loss, sorrow and peace, and joy I can’t explain. The mountains do not judge. They remain the great neutral teacher.

Four of these photographs feature @conrad_anker, someone who has committed a lifetime to a craft, in a place that was here long before him and will remain long after. The rest honor the place that nurtures us. The chaotic symmetry in rock and ice. Light moving across a glacier. Small things, easy to miss.

Honored to share the space, and some time, with two incredible artists, @alexprager and @jackdavisonphoto.

left my DSLR at home..

brought this beast of an iphone along instead:
iphone 18 pro max, now with variable aperture, which is a fancy way of saying your camera lens can now change the size of its opening.

having a range of f/1.48 - f/4 is wiiiild for a smartphone… this AND the powerful A20 chip to power fast, hand-held shooting, crisp images even in lowlight and moving subjects. this is the biggest hardware upgrade for pro iphone users. color me impressed.

im currently leading a travel group across Kazakhstan over the next 10 days. will post more when i am able to and when connection is stable. meawhile here are some snaps of my first coupla days in Almaty. will be heading further east to the Kazakh Altai region in the next coupla days.. watch this space!

i love my  tribe.

the annual september keynote event is where ill meet so many incredibly talented photographers (my cover shot is by @victorabarca), reconnect with old friends, make new ones.
