Hi, this is @josecastrellon and @juan_brenner signing off, thanks a million to @cherrygallery_ for letting us takeover, We really hope to see everyone in the near future when “Matando el Trópico” happens in a physical form.

Our show “Matando el Trópico” (Killing the Tropic) was supposed to be up at Cherry this month, we posted images from the nine Central American and Caribbean artists in the show.

All the works have been carefully selected to construct and portray why our environments and social dynamics function in such fragile ways, why foreign interventions is such a big part of our different cultures and hopefully we can make our subversive position evident; the name of the show responds to the idea of how all this outside forces have shaped and are still now reshaping our realities.

Luis Corzo @cor.zo , from the series PASACO, 1996 •
(Guatemala City, Guatemala) On the 18th of April, 1996, my father and I were abducted from our home and held captive for thirty-three days by an organized crime group known as “Los Pasaco”. In the early 90s, “Los Pasaco” were the most feared and notorious group of criminals in the country. During this captivity, my father was physically tortured and eventually had his left ring finger amputated and sent to my grandfather to pressure him into sending more money for ransom. Eventually, my father was released on the 30th day and told to gather more ransom money in order to have me released. Three days later, I was released in the small town of Chiquimulilla, Santa Rosa.

PASACO, 1996 is an investigative photography project that revisits this act. The project contains recuperated documents/ media of the time, as well as new documentation of locations, people, and objects that took part in the act. The main objective of this project is to initiate conversations surrounding the story; those of violence, corruption, capital punishment and criminal rehabilitation. •

Hi there, this is José Castrellón @josecastrellon from Panama and Juan Brenner @juan_brenner from Guatemala City, taking over for a couple weeks. Andrés Vargas @andresxvargas “Los Esclavos”, 2017.
•
Working as a team and remotely, the photographers Andrés Vargas and Richard Anderson set out to find and represent two nuclei: that of America and that of America, in other words, that of the entire continent as it is known to Latin Americans and Spanish-speakers, and that of the United States of America, whose citizens use the abbreviation America to refer to their country. The simultaneous search for two centers that bear almost the same name but describe designated geographical areas, noting both a semantic inconsistency and the carefree attitude reflected in the voracious appetite of the country that has sought to conquer more than just the name given by colonial powers prior to the entire continent. “Los Esclavos”, 2017
The name of this river was placed by Pedro de Alvarado during the conquest of the Guatemalan territory in the fight against the Xincas. The indigenous people were enslaved and then forced to build a bridge that crosses the river.

Hi it’s @audreystemann ! My prints included in @rebecca.renton @briekane and my show “Look back on time with kindly eyes.” @cherrygallery_ are from my thesis project “When we were little, so little I don’t remember.” The coffee creamers are part of my grandmother’s collection that she stole from restaurants throughout her young adult life. Each anothotyoe print is exposed in the sun for 1 to 6 weeks depending on the plant material, weather and season. Pictured here are pansy, red cabbage, pokeberry, chard and iris pigments.
