My first “Meet the Artist”. I have been meaning to make one since 2021/22, but I hadn’t found my art style and was strictly a struggling portraiture artist at the time (didn’t have the sufficient tools, hehe).

So, if you’re new here or you’ve been here since 2021, my name is Chidimma. I’m a visual artist and registered nurse. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember—say as early as 4—on MS Paint, my dad’s old theses, on the walls. I’d wanted to become a physician for just as long but changed my mind last minute for my sanity and in the long run, my craft.

Art to me is like breathing. If I am not creating something in any capacity, I become insufferable. My love for science stems from my insatiable hunger for knowledge. I am not perfect in either fields, but they are inseparable and have failed to exist independently.

I am also Christian. I feel the need to say this because I tend to come off as unconventional, given the current state of Christendom. My faith has heavily impacted my creativity because I believe we were created by The Creator, to create (no, I have not read The Artist’s Way, and probably won’t).

I’ve spent earlier years making art solely about my interests—things I like—but I’m gradually tilting towards making art that reflects not just my innermost thoughts, but the times, even though the act of refusing to engage with issues is a political statement itself. And I intend to do my best this year.

Stick around if you like. 🤍

This was one of the photos I was extremely excited to post in my black history month series, until my grandmother passed away. That was the primary reason I didn’t post the rest of the photos. The “secondary” reason was that apart from all the hustle and bustle of the funeral as well as other events that had sapped my energy and tried to attack me mentally, there was doubt. I pretty much had impostor syndrome, despite everything (mainly because I was too busy admiring people’s work and neglecting the beauty of mine), but thanks be to God, the curator of this museum called my mind for calling me back to action. And so here’s to a much better season, not a perfect one, but a joyful, expressive one filled with growth 🥂💚. I will be posting the rest of the photos (they aren’t many lol)
Ps, I call this one, “ÖMÖ TINÚÖLÁ” because just like the Tinúölá in question, I will be doing great things and even more.
