This weekend my sister and I were talking about visiting a dark sky park, which inspired me to read some space picture books from our home library. I realized I havenā€™t shared two of my favorites on here! Meet the most adorable rocket in the galaxy! šŸš€ šŸŒŒ In ROCKET SHIP, SOLO TRIP, with sweet rhyming text by @chiarabcolombi and adorable illustrations by @skortch, readers blast off with Rocket and follow her first solo mission to place a satellite in orbit to take pictures of space. Little ones will appreciate her first time jitters and the encouragement she receives from Ground Control to complete her mission. The ending lets readers know that Rockets adventures arenā€™t over. ā€œShe hopes her next launch comes up soon, maybe this time to the moon.ā€ Sequel? Yes, please! This is an exciting and comforting picture book that begs to be read again and again! In ROCKET BEAMS, LUNAR DREAMS Rocket must learn to take turns so Lander can study the Moonā€™s surface. ā€œBut Rocket feels no joy this time. Why just Lander? Itā€™s not fair. The Moon is big! Why canā€™t they share?ā€ When Rocket learns that Lander is afraid of heights, she reassures him and admits she was scared her first time. The honest text and breathtaking art will delight young readers! This is sure to be a new favorite for all space lovers!

Artist secret. You donā€™t need new gear or more gear. My iPad is 8 years old. My first poster that sold out was pen and paper. Scanned it and colorized it in photoshop. Now go draw. ā€œRocket Ship Solo Tripā€ by @chiarabcolombi illustration by @skortch

ROCKET BEAMS, LUNAR DREAMS ( 2025-Viking) by @chiarabcolombi and illustrated by @skortch (Scott Magoon) is a rhyming picture book about a rocket whose mission is to take a new team member, a robot named Lander, to the moon. But rocket wants to land too but his job is to orbit the moon and safely drop off Lander. When Lander reveals heā€™s afraid of heights, Rocket must use his experience and expertise to ease Landerā€™s fears if they want to have a successful mission. Thereā€™s several #Stem elements in this book and a great lesson that you canā€™t always be the superstar, sometimes you have to be the supporting cast and thatā€™s just as important. The illustrations are dynamic! At this point in the timeline Iā€™m about ready to launch myself into spaceā€¦or at least do so mentally so I can escape for a bit. Sigh. In all seriousness, assuming we ever have real scientists back in charge at any of our agencies, perhaps things in these books - like colonizing Mars - will one day come true. In the meantime, keep reading. šŸ«  . ROCKET BEAMS, LUNAR DREAMS (@penguinkids) is a book I would absolutely have bought when my kids were younger - 100%. The rhyme, the adorable illustrations, itā€™s the full package and absolutely perfect for preschool and early elementary age kids. . MOVING TO MARS (@gmcpublications) and THE UFO FILES (@quartokids) are aimed at an older audience. Go middle grade at a minimum but advanced readers will be captivated by these as well. The former details exactly what moving to Mars would entail and look like, with fantastic information about the planet. The latter takes on what an alien encounter might actually be like while infusing the pages with all sorts of science from Earth that would help in understanding new life forms. Truly fascinating stuff in both. . Big thanks to the publishers for sharing these with us! Swipe for a look inside! . . . #theufofiles #kathrynhulick #westonwei #quartokids #movingtomars #gmcpublications #missiontomars #marslife #rocketbeamslunardreams #chiaracolombi #scottmagoon #penguinkids #spacebooksforkids #spacebooks #gifted

Epic visit last week in NY with @fm_schools! Gang, I am still unpacking all the memoriesā€”and so grateful for the warm welcome throughout each day. Student-made banners, displays, and beautiful artworks, each an ambassador to welcome me in. One bright banner featured reductive drawings in the spirit of LINUS THE LITTLE YELLOW PENCIL, others brought my book characters to life (with a student spin), and one showcased clever puns with author nods to @missamyk, @ericlitwin and meā€”complete with student-written book profiles. So much heart, humor, and imagination (students used forks as a sort of rake brush to illustrate our monkey fur, @arielbbooks!). Smudged pastel chalk for our birds, @mattwardwords and our rockets were ready for lift off, @chiaracolombi! Mammoth thanks to each schoolā€™s rock stars: librarian, librarian assistants and art teachers for curating excitement by way of such spectacular displaysā€”and for sharing your own amazing work, too. Thanks to the many administrators and teachers for their time and kind words as well. šŸ˜Œ Across nine presentations, we blasted off with the ROCKET SHIP series (by Chiara Colombi) and dove deep into my graphic novels THE EXTINCTS with older readers. I created live digital drawings (that will hopefully hang in the school libraries!) and fielded some fantastic questions. I signed hundreds and hundreds of books, thanks to the team @riversendbookstore in Oswego. Lunchtime brought small-group Q\&As with fourth gradersā€”on writing, art, and vital debates likeā€¦ bacon or sausage? Waffles or pancakes? šŸ³šŸ„ž The enthusiasm, curiosity, and creativity of these students made every moment unforgettable. Thanks to the schoolsā€™ HSA and to @authorsunbound for bringing us all together. šŸš€šŸ¦£ Want to book a school or library visit for next year? Link in bio! šŸ“š Also in the bio: links to my books and more. Some photos courtesy K. Kerr. P.S.
