One more Brazilian Kids National on the books.

Being a kids’ coach is hard. If coaching adults is difficult, imagine coaching kids from 3 to 15 years old.

A few things we always need to keep in mind:

Every single kid who steps on the mats wants to win. Sometimes parents—and even some coaches (including a lot of black belts)—don’t understand that.
We need to be a coach, psychologist, friend, parent, and supporter all at the same time.
Screaming at a kid is not going to help anything.
Remember that the opponent is also a kid—someone else’s son or daughter who is stressed and nervous too. Never say something you wouldn’t want to hear directed at your own athlete.
Wait a few days before giving final feedback. The kids already have a lot on their minds after a competition. After a few days, kids, parents, and coaches will all be more relaxed, and the conversation will be much more productive.
Ask the kid what they need from you. Many times, after a competition, they need a parent—not a coach.

Over the years, I’ve coached at many high-level kids events: (keep reading ⬇️)

Embody your passions and share them with your loved ones, creating a sense of unity and joy.

I feel fortunate to have shared my love for Jiu Jitsu with my family, and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to promote my wife to a purple belt, my son to an orange/white belt, and my daughter to a white/black belt.

Thank you Jiu Jitsu.

God bless us!

Thank you for allowing me to share my knowledge with all of you. I undoubtedly learned a great deal.

It was incredible to see old friends and legends of our sport, but I also formed many new connections. The Jiu Jitsu lifestyle is unique. What an unforgettable week.

Thank you and let us continue spreading Jiu Jitsu.

Every father should remember one day his son will follow his example, not his advice. So let be the example.

This weekend we both took a GOLD MEDAL. It’s not about the color, it’s about a lifestyle. How many father can be doing a sport (competition) with your kids? Thank you God, I can!

I believe one of the hardest things I have done and doing in life is to be a father and a professor to my son (as an athlete). Finding a balance is not easy.

As a father, I have to motivate and support him to become the best adult he can be. But of course, as a father, I also want him to achieve his best performance and learn resilience through this. I have never forced him to be an athlete, but of course I love the idea.

As a professor of an athlete, I have to be tough and tell him truths that a father would not normally tell. But I also have to be an inspiration that many children do not see in their fathers. I have to teach him things that he will not understand today, but one day life will show him and he will be prepared for it.

Being both (father and professor), I know that he has the chance to be good and much better than I was. Because he only does it because he wants to do it! I have never forced him to fight, but if he wants to fight, he will be prepare like a champion.

I will always do everything possible and impossible to provide for my children with the option of being athlete and trying to reach places that the vast majority of the population will not reach due to lack of resilience.

I don’t know how many times I cried with joy during his victories and how many times I blamed myself during his defeats. But I love being able to take him around the world to fight and accompany me to teach classes, share this experience and show the unique lifestyle that Jiu-Jitsu provides us.

May God bless us to continue and who knows, one day I will be able to tie a black belt on him and see success in his personal and professional life.

Obrigado.
