🇪🇸 (🇬🇧 in comments )
¡Segundo día oficial en el SPIEL Essen! 🎲
Tuvimos reuniones súper interesantes con editoriales geniales como Horrible Guild, Sorry we are French y KTBG /Burnt Island Games. 🤝
¡Mañana más!

One of the nice things about SPIEL is having your mind changed about a game you thought wasn’t for you.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance was one we’d mostly ignored beforehand. The longer playing time didn’t help, and we’d somehow convinced ourselves it would involve battlefield scenarios that weren’t really our thing.

Well... turns out we were wrong 😅 After getting an explanation at @czech_games_edition today, we’re definitely interested in finding out more.

🤖 We also managed to actually play something! At @portalgamesus we tried one of the scenarios of Robo Run, a two-player cooperative game where you program how you, your companion and the enemy robots will move. We played a full scenario and had a good time with it.

📖 Oil Rock at @craniocreations_global also caught our attention, particularly the flipbook that determines the strength and availability of your actions. Another one to investigate after the fair.

Most of the rest of our Friday was spent going from one meeting to another, with visits to some of the publishers we’ve worked with for years in between. It’s always great catching up with Will at @drandagames, exchanging national delicacies with @boardanddice and hearing a little about what’s coming next from @mindclash_games 👀

And yes, SPIEL was busy today. At times very busy. We’ve discovered that getting from Hall 3 to Hall 8 can actually be quicker if you go outside rather than trying to cross the halls. A bit windy, but effective 😂

🍴 We also discovered at around 3pm that we’d completely forgotten about lunch. Nothing like a rumbling stomach to remind you that meetings aren’t technically food.

Two days down. Feet increasingly unhappy. Still having a great time.

🇩🇪 SPIEL 26 NEUHEITEN CHECK: Wild World von @chilifox_games

👥 Spieler: 1-4
🎂 Alter: 14+
⏱️ Spielzeit: 45-90 Min
⚙️ Komplexität: 2.7/5
✍️ Autoren: Eilif Svensson, Åsmund Svensson, Viljar Opdal Svensson
🎨 Künstler: Eirik Belaska
🏠 Verlag: @chilifox_games

🎲 Trying to figure out which games to check out at SPIEL Essen? We’ve already played a few, so here’s what we think.

We’ve managed to get our hands on quite a few of this year’s releases before the fair. Which is great, of course, although it hasn’t exactly helped us shorten our wishlist 😅

We thought we’d split them into two posts, starting with nine games on the more strategic side of things.

🏺 There’s quite a mix here, from pottery workshops and political campaigns to floating settlements and building temples for the Greek gods. I mean, nobody can accuse board games of running out of subjects just yet.

👀 You’ll find our thoughts with each photo, including what we liked and what we weren’t so sure about. And there’s a tenth game waiting on the last slide, because apparently nine wasn’t enough 🙃

🔗 We’ve also written full reviews of these games on tabletopping.games, if you’d like to know a bit more before Essen.

Have you played any of these already? Or is there a game coming to SPIEL that you think we should check out?

🏺 NÍJAR

Building a pottery workshop sounds straightforward enough. You add wheels, kilns and glazing areas, then put your craftswomen to work.

Except you start with seven workers and finish with just five, while your workshop keeps getting bigger. At some point, another improvement isn’t nearly as useful as actually making and selling pots.

I like that trade-off, especially with other players competing for actions and customers. Just be prepared for some lengthy turns if everyone wants to calculate every possibility.

☢️ ASHES: BLACKOUT PROTOCOL

Humanity has survived a nuclear war, and now we’re in charge of making the surface habitable again. No pressure.

You’re developing an underground colony, rescuing survivors and contributing to the Phoenix Project. What I like is how the different systems connect. Improving one part of your colony often helps somewhere else.

There’s a lot to keep track of, though. This is definitely one for people who enjoy heavier eurogames. It took us a couple of plays to really see what the game has to offer, but I’m glad we gave it tha
