A tall steel parking lot pole begins to shake even though the wind appears calm. Nothing is touching it, and there is no visible force pushing against it, yet the structure vibrates with a steady, almost rhythmic motion.

The movement is caused by a phenomenon called Aeolian vibration. As wind flows around a narrow object like a pole, it forms alternating swirling air currents known as vortices. These tiny pulses of pressure occur rapidly and repeatedly, applying a rhythmic force to the structure.

When the frequency of those wind pulses matches the natural frequency of the pole, the vibrations become visible. Engineers monitor this effect closely on structures such as power lines, towers, and bridge cables, where even gentle wind can produce persistent oscillations over time.

My buddy @chingosoftrees loves trees like I love capturing legacies. He’s a master arborist so when I almost killed my baby Century Tree when we moved a few years ago, he told me exactly what to do. His expertise helped my tree survive and thrive. A couple days ago he dropped by my house to help me figure out what all I could safely prune. Shows up. Assesses and prunes. Drops knowledge. Asks for nothing. Then he’s off to save the next tree. He’s like a guardian tree angel. Give him a follow.
