The Motor Vehicle Use Map is the Forest Service’s legal map for all motorized travel on National Forest land.

No color, no topography, just facts: what you can drive, where, when, and with what.

I’ve had the honor of seeing much of the world.

Canoed the Amazon.
Walked the Via Dolorosa.
Swam the Red Sea.
Safaried across Botswana.
Dodged bullets in Bosnia.

I’ve had some incredible adventures.

But lately, I’ve been thinking about adventure differently.

The moments that have changed me most haven’t always been the ones that took me the farthest.

Sometimes, adventure is simply stepping beyond the edge of what’s comfortable.

Giving when it stretches you.
Showing up when it’s inconvenient.
Stepping into someone else’s story and choosing to care.

And the more I think about it, the more I realize there’s something deeply different about an adventure that leaves someone else’s life changed simply because you were there.

You don’t just experience something extraordinary.

You become part of it.

Maybe the greatest adventures aren’t about what we see or where we go. Maybe they’re about who we become, and who gets to rise because we stepped in.

In two years, this Land Cruiser has carried my family as we traveled from the desert floor to the mountain tops. The landscapes were unforgettable, but the best moments came from sitting by the fire and sharing some laughs with friends and family.

How to properly extinguish your campfire - even when you’re tired and ready to hit the road:

1. Drown it - Pour water on it. A lot of it. That bucket the campground gave you 30 feet away is there for a reason.

2. Stir it - Mix the ash and embers into a slurry.

3. Drown it again.

4. Feel it - Hold the back of your hand just above it. If you feel any heat, repeat.

A campfire left hot can smolder for hours and reignite in wind.

Cold to the touch = dead out.

Playa safety brief:

✓ Check weather - storms turn playa to concrete glue
✓ Bring comms (inReach / sat/star-link) + paper map
✓ Extra fuel, water, food
✓ Air down to 18-20, bring compressor to air back up
✓ If you leave a rut, you did it wrong - stay off when damp
