In my previous post I talked about the personal mixers we all use in our 19-person pit @bwaygatsby. I made this video earlier this year to show how far apart the marimba and cello actually are 😂 (and we have multiple solos together!)

With thanks to @chris_natale0 - who was covering for our @yu.rhythm.perc - for his help making this video, and as always, to Brian Ronan’s incredible sound team ❤️

This piece has challenged me in a lot of unconventional ways, especially through its mandated sticking. Each mallet position is assigned a specific hardness, so crossing mallets becomes essential in order to keep each musical line voiced by the same mallet throughout. Takahashi’s writing demands that every line maintain its own distinct color and character, resulting in a clear sense of counterpoint. It is such an incredible sound, or will be when I can finally play it comfortably 😅

Getting ready for our @yu.rhythm.perc concert in September where I’ll be accompanying Yuri on bass marimba (get tickets if you haven’t!!!). The concert features Brazilian style music so I am focusing on getting a good feel… not quite there yet 🤣

Hashing out letter D with the actual part now. The right hand plays a syncopated ostinato in 16th note subdivision while the left hand plays the melody in triplet subdivisions over the ostinato. I’m like 80% where I want to be from a technical standpoint and maybe about a negative 10% where I want to be from a musical standpoint. I also started a handwritten practice log to keep a physical record of my progress rather than whatever disorganized way I was doing it before :)

This section of the piece is my favorite but also probably the hardest. Throughout both movements, the composer dictates what mallet must be used and what position those mallets should be in the players hands, so at such a brisk tempo playing this section ends up being the most technically complex but rewarding :)
