Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Chris Hillman of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers (among others) was one of our favorite guests ever and we love supporting anything that he’s doing. He’s talking about some new projects going on in his world.

The Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino donned the flying horse marketing slogan “Go Wild” around 1999, so says the internet.
The Flying Burrito Brothers have the best cover, no best VERSION, of “Wild Horses” - FACT. Originally written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. Gram Parsons chummed around with them on tour (even sang unofficially on stage at concerts) and got to hear the song shortly after it was written. They let The Flying Burrito Brothers (who also was made up of the bass player from The Byrds, Chris Hillman) cover it on their album “Burrito Deluxe”, which for whatever reason was released a BEFORE The Rolling Stones released it.
One of my top 10 albums of all time is “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” by The Byrds, featuring Gram Parsons on vocals.
Anyway, I know a little about a lot, but that’s not enough. This page is here to take a deep dive into the history of music, people, places and things.
I might be right, and I might be wrong!

The Byrds’ Chris Hillman telling it like it is about the benefits of playing bluegrass music! You’ll never get overweight when you’re starving! You’ll become more spiritual and less materialistic, not being able to afford anything! But hey ... playing the bluegrassmusic is a rich experience ... if only you can survive! 🤠

There’s something satisfying about spending YEARS hunting for the album everyone tells you is essential..only to discover you might like the supposedly lesser records even more. That’s BASICALLY what happened to me with the Flying Burrito Brothers.

I knew almost nothing about them..but then when I started asking people for suggestions about classic bands that may have somehow slipped past me over the years..they kept getting brought up..and specifically their album The Gilded Palace of Sin. Onto the want list it went..where it pretty much stayed forever..could not track it down for years.

But in the meantime other records of theirs kept popping up..and I was checking them out. And then..wouldn’t you know..by the time I finally DID land the big one..albums like this one..Airborne..had already made their case pretty damn well.

The Burritos began in the late ’60s around Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman..coming out of the Byrds orbit with an idea of smashing country into rock without cleaning up either side. They made the combination feel dangerous, soulful and cool.

Parsons involvement with the band was short-lived however..he was gone after two albums..and the lineup kinda became a revolving door..but that country-rock spirit kept moving.

By the time Airborne dropped in 1976..the band was apparently a VERY different animal. So this record catches a later Burritos lineup leaning into polished country-rock while leaving plenty of room for their signature and unmistakable pedal steel.

Out of Control is a KILLER opener with barroom momentum..Waitin’ for Love to Begin brings out their sweeter melodic side..and Border Town has the loose, road-worn feel I want from this band. There’s even an unexpected Stevie Wonder cover She’s a Sailor..which tells you how unwilling they were to treat country-rock like a rigid little box.

Airborne never carried the historical weight of the Parsons records..and this incarnation of the band soon dissolved. But that’s part of why finding it was so much fun.

I went looking for the Flying Burrito Brothers because everyone told me which masterpiece I needed. Somehow the detours became every bit as interesting as the destination.

This groundbreaking album in Country AND Rock history turns 58 today, but to “Sweetheart of the Rodeo,” I say, “You Ain’f Goin’ Nowhere.” To celebrate its impact today, I made a long playlist for my morning walk that starts with “Hickory Wind” and ends with “Summer Wind” by @chrishillmanofficial
