ADVOCACY IN ACTION pt 2.

If you had only a few minutes to authentically connect with someone you had never met, in order to inspire them to rally around your passion for clean air, clean water and a healthy planet, what would you say?

Over the course of two days I saw firsthand what the confluence of preparation and passion looks like as Olympians, scientists, athletes, and artists all stood toe to toe with this country’s decision makers and advocated for the end of EPA deregulation, to defend public lands from fossil fuel extraction, and to preserve the outdoor experience for future generations.

It was inspiring to witness.

One of the things I’m most grateful for in bringing Ecology of New Hampshire’s 4,000-Foot Mountains to life is the incredible community of photographers who contributed to it.

Nearly 200 local and regional photographers helped illustrate the ecology, natural history, and science of the White Mountains. Several conservation and research organizations also contributed photography, including the @appalachianmountainclub @mwobs , @u.s.forestservice

Together, their work helped build a collection of approximately 400 images documenting rare species, White Mountain weather phenomena, landforms, sensitive habitats, and scientists and researchers at work in the field.

The White Mountains are fortunate to have an extraordinary community of photographers who not only capture the beauty of this landscape, but also help tell its ecological story.

I’m incredibly thankful to everyone who shared their work and helped make this book possible.

@katieschide PhD, a geologist and geomorphologist, former AMC hut crew member, and professional mountain ultrarunner, describes the book as going “deeper” into the natural history and ecological details that make the White Mountains so special. Steven D. Smith, longtime White Mountains author, naturalist, photographer, and veteran AMC trail-guide editor, calls it a “landmark book,” the first comprehensive ecology and natural history guide to the 48, and an “essential companion” for hikers who want to better understand the peaks.

Mountain Guides - Barometers of Change, created by POW Creative Alliance member Chris Shane, follows Angela into the Arctic, where her life’s work collides with a rapidly shifting planet. As a guide, she’s spent decades leading people into some of Earth’s most awe-inspiring places and witnesses the impacts of climate change with her own eyes

It was a privilege to join this project in post-production to help Angela bring her story to life. Under Chris’s excellent direction and collaboration, we shaped a compelling narrative together. Editing documentaries produced in such a wild, fast-paced environment presents unique challenges in post-production, but trusting the process and creating several iterations helped uncover the story we wanted to tell. Huge thanks to the entire crew and everyone who supported us throughout this process.

An insane adventure in an amazing place. I’ve never been somewhere so quiet. Thanks @chrisburkard @brodyleven and @chrismshane for an adventure to remember.

We rode from the coast to Greenland’s interior ice cap and back. All above the Arctic Circle.

This may have been the first Ranger in Greenland and we were so stoked to see the legend @chrisburkard take this bike that was custom painted by our friends at @tec_gnar on what seemed to be an epic adventure to the ice cap in Kangerlussuaq. 7 days of snow, mud, and what looks like some insanely cool views. Congrats to @chrisburkard @brodyleven @chrismshane @joshreids on a rad adventure, this is what it’s all about!

“The hardest miles of my life,” mentioned @chrisburkard during a particularly hard section. No one disagreed.
With time, those miles will get easier in our memories. It’s already happening to me. Here is our reminder of not only the terribly slow travel across Greenland, but also how much we loved it.
In fact, it was the reason we were there.

We made it to Greenland’s interior ice cap. A crazy adventure from Sisimiut to Point 660.
