Chief Ryan Johansen: "...our morale is the highest it's been in the 20 years that I've worked here. We don't have the recruitment retention problems. The officers are happy. They're healthy. They love their jobs. They understand their purpose. Their families support what we're doing here. It works."

This week, Roger Walsh and John Dupuy conclude their conversation with Chris Orrey, retired police lieutenant with over 30 years of service with the Hayward, California Police Department; and Ryan Johansen, the current Chief of Police for the City of San Bruno, California.

Lt. Chris Orrey, Ret.: "Can you imagine if police officers knew all of that kind of history, like what happened to Isaac Woodard, and then faced people talking about Black Lives Matter? What a difference that would be?"

Transcript:

If police officers understood that history of what police officers did in the 40s and 50s and 60s and 90s and currently—not all, of course, because I agree 100% that I also love cops. Cops are amazing, exceptional people. Yet, if we ignore what these communities have suffered at the hands of police officers, then we're just wasting all of that suffering. Ryan talks about turning that suffering and trauma into something good. Well, we need to do that with history.

Can you imagine if police officers knew all of that kind of history, like what happened to Isaac Woodard, and then faced people talking about Black Lives Matter? What a difference there would be? And that's just the perspective-taking that we can turn things around.

So, what are we going to create? Where are we going to let the pendulum go in the George Floyd era of policing? What we have to do is figure out is how to take care of the community and how to take care of the cops.
