Day 6: Fayetteville to Verona Beach State Park #mile266

Yesterday’s point of interest was the Oneida Community Mansion House, where a bunch of communalists set up a pretty chill egalitarian utopian feminist poly society (give or take some troubling eugenics-flavored family planning) before slowly morphing into a silverware company. I studied these guys in college so it was neat to tour their house and see their folk art. Plus it wasn’t up any big hills!

One thing that always sucks about these bikepacking trips is that by day 4 or so I feel like my legs are warmed up for a more-or-less unlimited number of miles per day, my gear-packing practice is all figured out, and I’m getting used to being mostly feral, and then the trip is over. Last night was Tacy’s last dinner with the team before her uncle comes to get her today, and soon I’ll have to read emails and sit on a couch and look at the internet. Why? Why I gotta do job? Why can’t I ride bike all day forever? :(

On the other hand, I got one of thirty thousand tiny little camp bathroom moths in my mouth this morning when I went to pee, and I like my job most days, and I enjoy the company of my husband and my fully dry socks and my cats and my kitchen appliances as well. But I’m already scheming on the next trip (Door County 2027 maybe?)

Days 4-5: Montezuma to Fayetteville to hanging at the NY State Fair #mile222

The sailing has been smooth the past two days: no more extreme weather events, only regular-type hills, and we’re all sleeping in ✨beds✨due to Tacy’s uncle putting us up for a couple nights. Today was our rest day, by which I mean riding 15 miles to the fair, walking around in the sun eating junk food for several hours, and riding back.

That fair was a FAIR, man. We saw Haudenosaunee dancers and rode a ride and drank 25 cent milk and saw a whole rotating scene made of butter and ate many different shapes of fried potato and goggled at prizewinning birds of unbelievable silliness. Recommend.

Day 3: Naples to Savannah #mile139

Central New York apologized for the brutal climbs of Day 2 by giving us a gorgeous sevenish-mile coast down the gorgeous rolling hills of Italy Valley at the start of our ride on Day 3. I wish I’d taken better/more pictures but I needed both hands to fight the speed wobbles whilst mooing at cows. MAGA country turned to Amish country as we approached the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge in a little bit of a hurry because there was a tornado coming! We decided to ditch our actual campsite in favor of pitching our tents in the little music pavilion at the campground where we spent the night, and like five different long-term RV folks came by to make sure we were okay. We were better than okay: we were safe and dry in a beautiful storm, eating little pies from the Amish grocery store, under the watchful eye of the RV lifers (and one disco ball).

Days 0 - 2: Chicago to Rochester to Naples #mile84

AND WE’RE BACK! Our characters have been extremely built over the first two days of this year’s trip, with the journey from the Rochester Amtrak station to Palmyra featuring a steady, soaking, finger-raisining rain, and the following day breaking my lifetime elevation gain record (turns out if you bike down to Lake Canandaigua to swim, you also have to bike back up).

Currently I’m in a hilariously bootleg “cabin” that advertised itself as having all the basics needed for cooking, but didn’t have a way to boil water, or any fuel source at all, or a pot. Tacy made spaghetti in about 15 jet boil batches while I cooked sausage on an electric griddle I found in the men’s room and Chrissy kept resetting the breaker in the hopes that we could use the advertised laundry machines to get the mud out of our clothes. But damn if the spaghetti we had to mix up in a coffee pot wasn’t some of the best spaghetti I’ve ever had! And I slept like a rock in the top bunk while being divebombed by moths and damselflies.

Tonight we’ll be back to tent camping at Montezuma wildlife refuge, where I imagine we’ll see even more of the turtles, snakes, and frogs we’ve been seeing on the road so far, and (I’ve heard) maybe also some bald eagles! Pray for our quads and our trench feet.

straight up - we have been discovering what this project is for over two years. gina generously invited us to begin a weekly-ish process with no set performance date back in 2024, and it’s been a gift to show up with others who continuously arrive into the unknown until it’s... manageably unknown. these performances are different each night, composed in real time using a combination of gina’s crisp choreography and some improvisational scores, with chrissy and I revealing much about ourselves and our friendship as we go along. it’s HARD work. and often has us arriving at epiphanies without realizing they’re coming our way. it’s special, and this is me saying I really hope I’ll see you there.
