We’ve spent the last 2 months deep in the portal of reviewing all the applications for the LAROTA Healing Arts Residency. We’ve been inspired by the range of practices and possibilities shared by practitioners from more than 50 countries around the world.

Questions about the relationship between personal and collective healing, the role of human-led creativity in transforming communities, what gardening, storytelling, and movement might teach us about grief, and how healing can be both accessible and financial viable for the healers.

Here are just a few of the practitioners who have stayed with us and whose inquiries left us imagining what is possible when we take the time to sit with our questions rather than look for answers. 🙏🏻

When those “greaser” films first hit the screen, Juan Crow was the law. Mexican and brown families were segregated, separate schools, separate seats, separate everything. We weren’t “allowed” to share space with white people, let alone star beside them.

And in 1946 the Méndez family sued so their kids could attend school with white children, and they won. Méndez v. Westminster desegregated California’s schools seven years before Brown v. Board of Education, you didn’t get taught that first one by design.

So isn’t it interesting they never teach you about this?

There’s a reason for that. When our people are the heroes, when we’re the ones who cracked this country open and dragged it toward justice, that story has to disappear.

Because a people who know they are powerful, who know they’ve won before, are a people who can’t be controlled.

Erasing us is the whole point, it always has been.

But this shit needs to change for real. We deserve our beautiful films, our scripts, our faces in those theaters too, not as the sidekick, but as the whole, full humans we’ve always been.

And we’re done waiting. We’ve got our own platforms growing now, our own cameras, our own voices, and we are telling our stories ourselves.

So share this. Put it on your story. Comment so the algorithm can’t bury it the way they buried the history. Because not enough of our people know this truth, and this needs to f**king change. 🌽✊🏾
