At every Year of the Book kickoff, students get to hear from a professional author, illustrator, poet or storyteller, and then choose a brand-new book to take home--the first of eight they'll receive over the school year. This book beautifully showcases the challenges, threats, and changes nature faces when we strip it of resources. It also highlights what natural cycles would look like and the many benefits that are lost by interrupting them. Teaching Artist Christy Mihaly (@christymihaly) of East Calais, VT was recently added to the Council's Youth Development and Creative Aging Teaching Artist Rosters. These rosters help Vermont organizations and schools get connected with skilled and experienced teaching artists. Christy is an award-winning children's author, poet, and teaching artist who has published more than forty books on topics ranging from hayfields to free speech to food. What an amazing weekend we had at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago! 📚✊   We loved meeting so many librarians, educators, and book lovers, and talking about the power of children’s books to spark curiosity and empathy.   One of our favorite moments was talking with librarians during this semiquincentennial year about America’s Founding Myths...And What REALLY Happened! and how it helps young readers build media literacy and critical thinking skills through the lens of U.S. history. It was inspiring to see so many educators excited about giving kids the tools to ask questions, evaluate sources, and think more deeply about the stories we tell.   A huge thank you to our incredible authors for signing books and to everyone who stopped by Booth #3530 to say hello.
