Caught with my good friend Michael Friedman in Geneva and finally got to try on a prototype of the @pattern.recognition_ch B-Theory! I gotta say that this watch was not at all what I expected, in a good way! It’s so, so light. It’s truly an object out of time, as Michael explained. It’s got finesse but also doesn’t want you to treat it preciously. This is a timepiece that wants to be worn and scuffed up. Anyone who knows me understands that I was gonna do that anyway but it’s nice to get permission! Congrats, Michael, you’ve created something truly special! On a Lange 1, the three-quarter plate is made from untreated German silver, or Neusilber—a copper–nickel–zinc alloy left without rhodium plating, gilding, lacquer, or another protective coating. Lange intentionally allows the metal to age naturally, developing the warm yellow-gold patina characteristic of older movements. The case may be sealed, but it is not a vacuum. It contains ordinary air, including oxygen and trace water vapor, and over long periods there is minute atmospheric exchange through gaskets and during servicing. That is enough to affect only the outermost atomic layers of the plate. At the surface, copper, zinc, and nickel atoms oxidize, forming an extremely thin, adherent passivation film of oxides, hydroxides, and related atmospheric compounds. Copper contributes most to the visible warming, while nickel and zinc help make the alloy relatively corrosion-resistant. This is not rust or meaningful deterioration; the reaction is shallow and increasingly self-limiting because the new surface film partially isolates the underlying metal from further exposure. What changes is primarily surface chemistry and therefore light reflection. A fresh Lange plate appears pale, cool, and silvery-champagne; with age it becomes richer, warmer, and more honey-gold, while the Glashütte ribbing remains structurally unchanged. The patina of a Lange three-quarter plate is time made visible at the molecular scale: the untreated alloy quietly reacts with the minute reservoir of oxygen and moisture inside the case, exchanging the brightness of freshly cut German silver for the warmer tone of a chemically matured surface. Behold, then, the relatively different rates of oxidation observable between a Lange 1 from April 2025 (Darth Onyx, left) and December 2022 (191.032, right)—a subtle, yet palpably discernible and aesthetically pleasing difference is manifest.

During my business trip to SF last week, I had a chance to catch up with @chrono.sf to talk watches, hear about his trip to W&W, and handle a few of his watches! Always wanted to see the Breguet Tradition 24 Second Tourbillon in person. The @gronefeld_watches Grönograf was pretty fun to handle and the @vacheronconstantin Overseas Skeleton Tourbillon in pink gold was quite a marvel on the wrist! @alangesoehne is the king of chronographs. And the L101 (left) and L951 (right) base caliber archetypes demonstrate this in spades. Even where substantial complexity is added, the underlying blueprint remains—across the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual, Tourbograph, and Tourbograph Perptual (which in my mind correlate with the L101, even though the Tourbograph came first, followed by the Rattrapante Perpetual, Tourbograph Perpetual, and Rattrapante); and the Double Split, Triple Split, and Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon (rooted in the L951). There’s no denying, however, that the base architecture stripped down to its essentials is as good as it gets.
