Since April, the Lynn Museum has been proud to exhibit Khmer Identity: Shadows in our first floor galleries! You have through September 16th to see this powerful exploration of identity unique to the Khmer experience.

Daveth Cheth ( @ddcheth ): Founder, Visionary, Writer
Cindy Sous (@cindy.sous ): Designer, Illustrator
Davey Chhoeun (@_dvy.c ): Fashion Designer, Stylist

"Identity is the defining characteristic and quality of a person or thing. Within a collective of people, identity is rooted in the sense of belonging. After Cambodia’s 1970 U.S. carpet bombing, codenamed “Operation Menu,” Cambodia and its people suffered a deadly and traumatic social and cultural revolution. The Khmer Rouge regime consequently led to the most significant displacement of the Khmer people. Seeking refuge in a foreign land, assimilation, and preservation of the homeland’s cultural identity has led to a third cultural identity that is not the homeland’s nor the new country.

“We are Khmer-Americans and a Khmer immigrant. Our parents and families were Khmer people who survived the Pol Pot genocide and the subsequent refugee camps/mass diasporic movement.

We are part of the Khmer artist and storytelling community, the protectors of Khmer culture and identity. We aim to educate ourselves and others about Khmer history to be well informed as we explore and shape our contemporary Khmer identity.”

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we would like to encourage you to visit Khmer Identity: Shadows, an exhibition on our first floor galleries. Connect with art made by Khmer Americans as they explore their unique identity in the aftermath of deadly and traumatic social and cultural revolution.

In 2020, we embarked on this collective journey together not knowing where it would take us. This exhibition consists of 2 years of many brainstorming sessions, zoom calls, and research. It has been so rewarding to see everything come together with so many people to thank for making this possible.

Thank you Doneeca Thurston, our good friend who is the Executive Director at Lynn Museum/Lynn Arts for supporting our project from the beginning. Having our exhibition in our hometown hosted by one of our high school friends makes this exhibition more close and dear to our hearts.

We’re incredibly grateful in the ways our community from the US to overseas showed up for us and each other. We recognize the level of vulnerability it takes to be a part of this journey in exploring our Khmer identities. Thank you to all those that submitted their photos, participated in our photography projects, visited, brought family and friends and shared their stories with us. With this exhibition, we hope to empower our community to take pride in the different ways our identities can be represented despite the shadows of our ancestral past.

Thanks to Lynn Cultural Council and Historic New England for their grant to support this project, Brickyard Collective for prints, and S & J Shaved Ice for being a vendor on site for the opening day.

Lastly, can’t forget thanking this team. It’s been a beautiful journey learning and growing together as a trio. ✨

The Khmer identity exhibition will be on display until September 2022 at the Lynn Museum - we will be sharing an online gallery for your viewing soon.
