The #SLOCity final Plaza Pop-Up this season features @SLOCountyArts and is one you won't want to miss. The Arts Council tapped local artist, SHAHRZAD, who created "Untitled VI", made up of six sculptures — including a hand, flame, “evil eye”, squiggle, rainbow and smiley face — that vary in height from four to six feet.

The large, colorful figures are juxtaposed by the hard, industrial materials they are made from including 600 pounds of hydrocal and 1,000 feet of quarter-inch steel rod— meant to express the collective contradiction of emotions experienced over the past year and a half exacerbated by the pandemic and global social unrest.

Head to Mission Plaza to check out these six magnificent bright, bold structures and make sure to tag #ShareSLO & #PlazaPopUps in your photos!

ICYMI: Proposed Upgrades at Johnson Ave / Sydney St. Crosswalk | Fall 2021 | The City of San Luis Obispo is planning to upgrade the pedestrian crossing at Johnson Avenue and Sydney Street to improve visibility and comfort for pedestrians attempting to cross Johnson Avenue, particularly for families walking to Sinsheimer Elementary School.

Proposed upgrades include installation of a raised pedestrian median refuge and replacing the existing “passive” beacon system with a more effective push button activated solar-powered Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon System (RRFB). The installation of a median refuge will require eliminating the existing northbound left-turn pocket on Johnson Avenue and restricting northbound left-turns at this location.

If you would like to provide questions or comments on this project, please contact Transportation Planner-Engineer, Justin Wong at jwong@slocity.org.

The City of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department just placed 20 shiny new recycling containers in 10 of the most used parks! ♻️

These containers will reduce the amount of waste sent to our local landfills, but it is important to keep our recycling clean to prevent contamination.

Did you know that an aluminum can will be back on the shelf in 60 days if recycled? 🥫 If not, it will sit in a landfill for 500 years before it oxidizes!

👏 Please do your part and thanks for recycling! #cityofslo #slo #sanluisobispo

Yesterday we discussed where our water comes from; today we will dive into how it is treated at the Stenner Creek Water Treatment Plant. 💧

To begin, raw water from our water sources is sent to an ozone contact basin for primary disinfection and oxidation. Excitingly, the Capital Improvement Project (CIP) to replace the historic ozone system with state-of-the-art technology is almost complete! These upgrades will retire the now aging previous equipment, improve energy efficiency, and reduce the overall footprint of this stage in the treatment process.

Next, water travels to a rapid mixing tank where aluminum sulfate (alum) and cationic polymers are added to induce the coagulations process of fine, suspended particles coming together. Next comes ballasted flocculation where the now coagulated water flocculates together to settle out of suspension and can be removed.

Water then goes to through the filtration process where particulate impurities and residual floc are filtered through fine layers of anthracite and silicate sand. When these filters become clogged, they are backwashed with filtered water that is then treated by a small package plant and then returned to the beginning of the treatment process to reduce water waste.

Three additions are then put in the water before it is sent to distribution: chlorine is added to provide additional disinfection properties while the water is in the distribution system, fluoride is added to prevent tooth decay, and a corrosion inhibitor is added to protect pipes from potential leeching.

Water is then gravity fed or pumped to a complex delivery system of over 150 miles of water mains, service lines, pressure regulators, hydrants, and other various assets – ultimately making its way into our homes and businesses! The City's water distribution system is specifically designed to provide continuous drinking water and fire suppression to the community at the proper pressure.

If there are ever any questions or concerns related to the treatment process, Jason Meeks, our City's Water Treatment Plant Supervisor can be reached at (805) 781-7566 or jmeeks@slocity.org. #cityofslo #slo #sanluisobispo
