POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Our relationships with our fathers can shape us - even when those relationships barely existed.

For Judge Mathis and Craig Young, a conversation about their dads opens up bigger questions about what boys carry into manhood, the anger we may not always recognize when we’re young, and how becoming fathers ourselves can change the way we understand our childhoods.

Craig brings a unique perspective as a mental health professional, author of Growing Up Young: One Family’s Faith Journey to the NFL, and father of Heisman Trophy winner and Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.

A personal conversation about fathers, sons, family and the experiences that shape the men - and fathers - we become.

What happens when pushing your child to succeed starts affecting your relationship with them?

Craig Young shares a difficult moment in raising his son, Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young, when he learned that Bryce no longer wanted him coaching him - or even wanted to be around him.

Long before Bryce became a Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Alabama, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, Craig was navigating the challenges of being both a father and a coach.

As a mental health professional and author of Growing Up Young: One Family’s Faith Journey to the NFL, Craig reflects on how painful that moment was and why protecting his relationship with his son mattered more than anything he could accomplish on the football field.

It’s a conversation about parenting, youth sports, expectations, and remembering that our children need us to be their parents first.

Think about what you praise your kid for after a game. How much of it depends on whether they played well?

We have an opportunity to help our kids recognize the qualities that will serve them long after they’re done playing sports. The things we choose to celebrate tell them a whole lot about what we value.
