Oh what a manifested moment—two Blue Jays in our first net run. Catching these two together was especially lucky—one hatch year and one after hatch year—a great opportunity to compare feather characteristics between age classes. Look at those smiles!

Super excited that our tiny banding station has the chance to collaborate and learn from @biodiversityresearchinstitute biologists who have a regional study deploying tiny tracking devices (nanotags) on a suit of songbird species—including this stunning Blackpoll Warbler. The goal of this work is to better understand songbird water crossing behavior, particularly around NJ, in hopes of making informed decisions on where to cite and not cite off-shore wind turbines. Huge thanks to @Z_korpi and colleagues for leading the charge and including us.

We are seeing a notable uptick in ticks on the birds this year. We rarely find ticks on resident species but today we had three Black-capped Chickadees with ticks. We suspect these are either Bird Ticks or Deer Ticks.

Songbirds eating fruits of invasive plant species is not big news. Cedar Waxwings and Northern Flickers are well know to show orange plumage, reflecting an occasional diet of invasive fruits like Japanese Honeysuckle, eating them while growing new feathers. Today we caught a hatch-year (born this summer) male Hairy Woodpecker who also seemed to feast on Honeysuckle while molting.

Big Ovenbird day—and they came in pairs! The variation in striping across their heads is striking. Presumably this variation reflects sexual selection? If only they were singing their “teacher teacher teacher” song….
