Some thoughts, from me to you, dear actor.

▪️You can do everything right, & still not book the job.
▪️ If it takes more than 3-5 takes, you aren’t ready to tape.
▪️ Your kindness matters more than your talent.
▪️Classes are for building your process, not your resume.
▪️No one thing you do will make or break your acting career
▪️Auditioning in-person won’t increase your chances of booking.
▪️You cannot control your bookings.
▪️You don’t need a demo reel if you haven’t booked work yet.
▪️ Feedback from CDs isn’t actually helpful.
▪️You can’t mindset your way out of systematic racism, misogyny, ableism ect
▪️Your self tapes don’t need to be cinematic.
▪️If you don’t plan to take a break, your body will take one for you.
▪️ You don’t need an agent to start booking paid work.
▪️Your career won’t get easier when you join the union, get an agent, or land a series regular
▪️You deserve a life outside of your career.
▪️ No matter where you are, you are not behind.

You can do everything right and still not book the job.

There might be 12 amazing actors who are equally talented- and do equally strong work- but only one person can book it. If you are training, have mastered your self tape set up, have killer materials- sometimes there just anything else you can do but be patient. And keep showing up. Stop looking for reasons why you didn’t book the job. Sometimes the reason isn’t helpful- and does have anything to do with you.

If it takes more than 3- 5 takes to nail it you aren’t ready tape (yet!).

You simply aren’t done with your prep. Don’t use the taping time as your prep time. If you don’t know it- don’t know who you are, who you’re talking to- why you say what you say - and aren’t able to are connected and grounded- you can’t learn all of that while taping. Give yourself time to prep. Taping it fast isn’t fast if it takes you 3 hours to do a 2 page scene. You gotta show up to tape the way you would to set. Be prepared and ready to play.

Your kindness matters more than your talent.

There are thousands of talent actors. And som

What’s for you won’t miss you!
Do you believe that?
Really?
🤔

If you DO, then don’t worry about all this talk about getting your work in fast. Get it in good. Get it in when you feel like you have really delivered something you can be proud of.

Your job isn’t to be fast.
Your job is to let your character live authentically in the world given to you. Craft over everything.
Always.

“I just don’t feel like comments are actually valuable in the space. I want to know how you feel. Did you enjoy it?

And I’m not even sure I want to know that. I made it and it’s out.

I was thinking about painters and painting.

They did the painting the the painting is done. They don’t know what I think about it when I walk through the museum, but it’s in the museum. Their intention of the painting doesn’t even matter.

If I look at the painting and I get something totally different from it than the artist intended, then that’s my business and their business was just to do it.

So, I’ve really tried to approach it. I found that that’s what works for me is to just I made it, now it’s yours.”

This is such a fantastic take on how we should deal with reactions and feedback of our work.

Really good art holds up decades later. And strong compelling stories will have people connecting in a myriad of different ways. I love this idea of, rather than trying to control the narrative of feedback- letting people have their own experience.

We don’t have to control the meaning or interpretation. We can do our work- and let people take away from it what they wish.

In a world flooded with reviews, and press, and social media comments- this is such a fantastic way to stay grounded in the work- and not get caught up in the negativity and judgment that we face from the public.

Quinta is so talented - and to be able to have such a level headed approach about public comments shows such wisdom beyond her years.

I’d love to learn this kind of gentle detachment from outcomes and reviews. I think it would help me be so much more free as an artist as well as be happier as a human. 💛

What if you embraced that it is impossible to fail at your auditions?
.
.
.
We cannot control the outcome of our auditions.
So we need to stop letting the outcome define our success. We need to redefine what success - and failure *actually* look like in process.

Sure we can follow directions, we can do our best to deliver what is being asked. We prepare, we show up, we do the thing. But ultimately, we need to remember that there really is no way to fail at our auditions if we show up for ourselves.

We might miss the mark, forget a slate, or any number of ‘mistakes’ that can happen. But we need to stop seeing those things as failures. Because there literally is no consequence to making those kind of mistakes. They feel gut wrenching at the time - we kick ourselves when we forget something. But I promise you, no one is looking at you as a failure.

Its almost impossible to create something, if we are editing and self-censoring at the same time. We need to grant ourselves space to explore and play without fear of messing up ruling our choices. And no one is”blacklisting” you for forgetting to do a full body slate.

And we gotta talk about his this fear of failure affects the work. Concerning ourselves with what “they want” or spending energy “trying not to make a mistake” will not lead to more grounded and connected work. It will only limit us. It will make us self-conscious and afraid. It will inhibit our creativity and prevent us from fully diving in.
.
.
.
The fear of failure is actually preventing you from doing your most authentic and connected work. You are letting the fear of getting it wrong, cut you off from finding your own truthful interpretation.
.
.
Please remember dear actors:

💛 You cannot fail.
💛 There is no one “correct” interpretation
💛 It is not your job to worry about what they want
💛 You deserve to grant yourself grace.
💛 You are enough.
💛 You are already right for the role.

Hi! I’m Clare,

I’M A WORKING ACTOR & AUDITION COACH.

I’ve logged over 15 years working in film, theatre, voiceover, tv & commercials.
I love what I do.

I am also:
Latina. Neurodivergent. From California. A dog mom. A trauma survivor. A wife. A sister. A cat mom. An avid reader. A Taurus. A writer. Director. Singer.

I WANT THIS INDUSTRY TO BE BETTER 💛

The industry is entrenched in this culture of hustle & scarcity. Everyday, actors are made to feel like their personal lives don’t matter. And that in order to succeed, we have to be willing to sacrifice our mental health, relationships, & happiness.

Sleep when you are dead. Make it work. Be available. Be ready to quit your job. Don’t complain. Be grateful.

💛 But it doesn’t have to be that way.

HONOR THE WHOLE PERSON. 💛

I started teaching over a decade ago because I realized the best way to make meaningful change in this industry, is to change how we approach our training.

I wanted to create a learning environment that supports an actor’s personhood. That means inviting them to bring their entire selves to the work.

Meeting them where they are.
Honoring their lived experience,
And letting actors drive their own training.

CONSISTENT. SUSTAINABLE. JOYFUL. 💛

I am not a guru. I don’t want to tell actors how they should approach the work. I believe there are infinite interpretations of a scene, and they are all equally valid.

You deserve to have ownership of your interpretation & process. I offer tools and encourage you to find what works best for you. I want to nurture your instincts and help you find your voice as a storyteller.

You shouldn’t have to unearth personal trauma to create believable performances. Whether you

I love how working on our craft can help us become the best versions of ourselves.

No matter where we go, we can’t escape ourselves.
And I just love that about acting. That in stepping into worlds and characters and circumstances different than our own, we can learn so much about ourselves.

The more I grow as an actor, the more I realize how much work I must do on myself. The work demands it, and our characters deserve it. I need to show up as the best version of myself to do this work. And whenever I find myself blocked- or find myself unable to see myself in a role- it always comes back to my own inner work.

Time and time again- when something gets in my way as an actor- if find that very same thing is also present in my real life. So to be a better actor, I have to work on myself. And I love the power of that. I love how transformative this work is, and how it challenges me to be a better person.

It’s why I’m so grateful for every role I get to play. Because each character has something to teach me. And in working on her, I learn empathy and compassion.

And as I learn compassion for each role- I learn to be, just a little more compassionate to myself.

The script is not the scene.
The script is a *map* of the scene.

Our script provides a wealth of information about our scene:
-Defines our given circumstances
-Provides the dialogue
-Describes the action within the scene.

But it is vital to remember:
The script is not the scene. The script is the map.
The scene is the journey.
The words on the page map out the story of the scene. The sequence of events.

But the scene lives beyond the page. The scene is the *journey* our characters experience. It begins well before the first line of dialogue & unfolds in the impulses.
It lives in every event that might happen between the lines.

The map is the same; the journey will be different.
When we explore the script again & again, the scene will unravel differently each time.
We will notice something new each time. Uncover new pathways to our destination.
While the text remains the same - the scene will take us along a different journey every time we explore it.

So when it comes to memorization the question is:

Would you rather memorize the map or learn the journey through exploration?

Given the choice , I would rather explore the journey.
Because if you hike the trail over and over, eventually -you won’t need the map.
When we lead through exploration - the body begins to internalize the journey.
(and if you lose your way- you can always pull out your map)

Our characters aren’t remembering words on a page. They are traveling through the story in pursuit of their destination - and they don’t have a map.

When we shift our relationship to the script and use it as a map- we discover - memorizing is not a *task* to accomplish but a byproduct of a thoroughly explored scene.

And our experience of the scene expands beyond the words on the page.

The story becomes embodied.
