Coalition of Latin Americans in the UK
Self-organised *led by and for* Latin American migrant organisations campaigning together since 2012

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Very pleased to see Latin Americans move a step closer to official recognition in the next Census. The Government Statistical Service has announced that Latin American is one of just eight proposed categories or changes progressing to the next stage.

This follows more than ten years of campaigning by @clauk.org.uk , @irmolondon and so many other organisations and individuals. Lambeth and Southwark Councils recognised Latin Americans over a decade ago, and others have followed.

Earlier this year I spoke at a parliamentary roundtable on this issue and joined other Latin American Labour councillors in writing to the Government in support of recognition.

The next stage is to demonstrate that the category would be understood and used by the community, so there’s still more work to do!

Find out more from @clauk.org.uk Cllr Martin Tiedemann & Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP join Latin American campaigners to call for recognition of Latin Americans in the 2031 census.

Click here to learn more 👉 There are around half a million of us in the UK, about the size of Edinburgh. But the census doesn’t count us.

Without ethnicity data, the NHS can’t plan services, councils can’t allocate funding, and discrimination in housing and work can’t be tracked. Community organisations are told there’s “no evidence of need” because we don’t appear in the statistics.

But recognition is already happening. Southwark, Lambeth, Hackney, the GLA, Arts Council England, King’s College London and others now include Latin American as a monitoring category.

The census should too.

Tag @officefornationalstatistics and tell them why it is important for ‘Latin American’ to be recognised as an official ethnic category.

Today marks the beginning of Latin American Heritage Month, a month to commemorate our community, its culture and history. We want to highlight the campaign for the recognition of ‘Latin American’ as an identity here in the UK.

Although we are a significant community, we’re still not recognised in official government statistics. If we want proper services for us, to have the barriers we face and cultural matters taken into consideration, we must strive for this visibility.

In the comments, tell the Office for National Statistics (ONS) @officefornationalstatistics why the recognition of the Latin American community is important for you.

Let’s celebrate that we’re a diverse, large and resilient community. Happy Latin American Heritage Month! 😊
